The ideal candidate will be a licensed RN with a minimum of 12 months of experience.

The primary purpose of the Research Nurse position is to assists with clinical and operational management of research protocols. Impacts research protocols and patients in designated protocols. Scope of position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and requires adherence to the policies and procedures of the institution.

Essential Job Functions-

Effectively conducts assigned operations of research protocols. Coordinates, evaluates and follows patient participation in clinical trials.

Assists in the collection and evaluation of data. Under direction, performs protocol-specific clinical tasks including patient assessment, screening, ordering tests, collecting specimens and monitoring responses. May administer medications.

Provides patient and family education. May provide professional and ancillary staff education concerning research protocols as required.

Education

REQUIREMENTS

Education

Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Preferred: Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing.

Experience

Required: One year of registered nursing experience

Preferred: Bachelor's of Science degree in Nursing.

Licensure/Certification

Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).

The ideal candidate must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association, preferably with at least one year of experience. The primary purpose of the Physician Assistant (PA) is to provide direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care. The PA impacts quality of patient care and patient outcomes throughout the care continuum. Job Specific Competencies Impatient Activities * Conducts inpatient rounds with attending physicians and communicates pertinent clinical information based on physical examination and review of patient data. • Manages daily patient problems and emergency situations as they arise and documents actions implemented and their resolution. • Completes admission H&P, consultation notes, daily progress notes and discharge summaries in compliance with institutional and departmental guidelines. • Requests consultations and communicates with other services, caregivers and outside providers to coordinate patient care. • Coordinates discharge planning. • Orders patient medications, treatments and tests within authorized delegated prescriptive authority and consistent with institutional policies and procedures. • Performs advanced patient care therapeutic procedures: removing arterial catheters. Outpatient Activities • Evaluates patients and communicates pertinent clinical information based on history, physical examination and review of patient data to attending physicians. • Dictates PME, H&P, consultation, clinic and telephone notes into the medical record according to institutional and departmental guidelines. • Facilitates appointments and testing for new patients and consultation patients to the department. • Coordinates urgent hospital admissions or emergency room referrals. • Assists with the management of unscheduled clinic patients. • Facilitates scheduling special procedures and tests with the appropriate department such as CVC insertions, echocardiograms, image-guided biopsies and aspirations, fine needle aspirations, arterial infusions and embolizations. • Monitors and follows up on results of tests including lab results, diagnostic imaging, other studies and pathology reports. • Requests consultations and communicates with other services and outside providers to coordinate patient care. • Orders patient medications, treatments and tests within authorized delegated prescriptive authority and consistent with institutional policies and procedures. Other Activities * Collaborates with the research team on the design of clinical protocols, creating or reviewing order sets, and/or management of protocol related events. • Assesses patients for protocol eligibility and notifies research team of potential protocol candidates. • Assesses patients for symptoms, side effects and toxicities pertaining to standard treatments and investigational studies. • May deliver medical presentations within the institution and at the local, state, and national level. • Periodic duties as requested by supervising physicians and allowed by the state and federal laws. • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills. Administrative • Completes paperwork which may include letters, FMLA, disability and insurance forms for patients by manually writing or typing necessary information or by dictated letter. • Completes peer to peer reviews and provides information to facilitate insurance authorization for testing and treatment. • Responsible for billing utilizing the Electronic Billing System to complete charges within 24 hours of providing care to patients. Clinical Research * May participate in clinical research by completing database forms, reviewing medical records for information, and interviewing patients/families for information. • Collaborates with the medical staff, research nurses, and other health professionals to complete research initiatives. Continuing Education * Attends continuing medical education opportunities to meet licensure and certification requirements and attends CME courses related to Sarcoma Medical Oncology as departmental staffing and funds allow. • Attends and actively participates in departmental meetings and conferences as scheduled. * Other duties as assigned. Licensure/Certification Required All of the following: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
