PURPOSE OF POSITION: To function as a professional research nurse and to apply in-depth knowledge about the care of infant, children, adolescent and adult research participants, patients and clients.

To rapidly recognize and anticipate subtle changes based on past experiences; to coordinate and communicate with appropriate resources as needed. To serve as a department-based role model and resource for policies, procedures and nursing care. To assist others in setting nursing care and department priorities, keeping in mind the education of self and others while maintaining a cohesive environment.


  • Care Coordination and Continuity

Responds to subtle research participant/patient and family changes. Engages with each unique research participant/patient and family in a compassionate manner.

Tailors caring practices to the individuality of research participant/patient & family. Recognizes importance of a healing environment; tailors the environment to meet the needs of the research participant/patient & family. Promotes safety throughout research participant/patient & family's transitions along the research continuum.

Demonstrates awareness of potential adverse events & increases awareness of other team members throughout research study. Sets research participant/patient-driven goals for education. Adapts education to meet the learning needs of the research participant/patient, family, & research team.

Integrates different teaching methods to match the learning styles of research participant/patient & family. Coordinates education with other members of research team. Precepts peers and students.

Facilitates learning for members of research team.

Inquires about cultural differences and considers their impact on research & care. Accommodates personal & professional differences in research plan of care. Helps research participant/patient & family understand the culture of the healthcare system.

Collects and interprets complex research & clinical data. Makes clinical judgments based on an immediate grasp of the whole picture.

Recognizes patterns and trends by focusing on key elements while eliminating extraneous details. Demonstrates proficiency in utilizing GCP.

Seeks advice, resources, or information to improve research participant/patient care. Begins to compare and contrast possible alternatives. Is an active member on research nurse forum or divisional councils, committees, task forces or projects by contributing to decision making.

Acts as a leader of point-of-care councils, research nurse forum committees or task forces. Assists with development of competence in peers; formally, by precepting new employees, and informally, by sharing knowledge at the point-of-care. Provides just-in-time feedback to peers and work to redesign systems that impact research practices to ensure research care delivery decisions are based on safe and ethical research practice using the nursing process.

Considers research participant/patient values and incorporates in research care, even when differing from personal values. Supports colleagues in ethical and research issues.

Makes ethical/moral decisions guided by GCP. Engages the research participant/patient's family, encouraging them to speak/represent themselves. Protects research participant/patient and family rights.

Bachelor of Science Nursing

Registered Nurse License

Two years of clinical experience
2 years related experience in research nursing

Ability to consistently function as outlined in the Research Nurse Advancement Pathway


BSN or ADN with contract to begin BSN completion within one year and complete within 5 years
2 years of clinical experience

To make accurate observations, to record test results, to analyze data, and to develop new methods. To guide the efforts of other laboratory personnel by explaining laboratory techniques and assisting in their experiments. Responsibilities * Customer Service - Relationship Management Maintain/manage strong working relationships with clients, colleagues, and other key stakeholders.
