This position is for a technical research assistant with dual roles. The first role is to conduct basic cellular immunology research using mass cytometry (CyTOF) to characterize and phenotype human and mouse immune cell subsets. The second role is to assist running the CyTOF Antibody Resource and Core that serves the Harvard Medical Area community. These two roles will be accomplished simultaneous with the technician splitting their time equally between both roles.
The technician will work on studies to profile human blood immune cells from patients with a variety of pathologies, including but not limited to autoimmunity, cancer, and traumatic injury. Mouse disease model studies will also be used to study immune cell responses to injury, infections, and radiation. The technician will work in tandem with another technician on day-to-day operations of the CyTOF antibody resource.
The technician's daily activities will involve validating and testing CyTOF antibody panels, cell preparation, cell staining with CyTOF antibodies, and data analysis. The technician will also help order supplies, prepare specialized reagents, and assist others in the lab or collaborators with CyTOF technology, animal research work, and other associated experimental techniques.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Help run the CyTOF Antibody Resource and Core - conjugating antibodies, validating conjugations, fulfilling orders, troubleshooting user requests, and participate in scientific collaborations with Core users (leading to publications)
Process human and mouse tissue into cell suspensions for experiments and to validate CyTOF-ready antibodies
Consult and interact with CyTOF users on the technical features of the technology
Analyze CyTOF staining data using software for multidimensional cell staining data
Train others in the laboratory on using CyTOF technology and other techniques
Work as a team on specific studies to profile human and mouse blood cells or tissue cells to identify disease-specific phenotypes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BS or BA required, concentration in biology, microbiology, chemistry, or related biological sciences.
0-2 years of practical experience in the field
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Basic laboratory skills
Computational skills and knowledge of how to use R programming or similar platform
Organizational skills and ability to focus on details
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to demonstrate professionalism
