JOB OVERVIEW - Research Assistant at Massachusetts Eye and Ear (Laboratory of Anne Takesian)

The overall goal of the Takesian Lab (takesian.hms.harvard.edu) is to investigate the mechanisms of cortical plasticity from the level of molecules to cells and circuits. The laboratory employs a wide variety of cutting-edge neuroscience tools in mouse auditory cortex, ranging from sophisticated anatomical tracing techniques, electrophysiological circuit mapping, two-photon imaging, and behavioral assays of learning.

As a Research Assistant, you will serve as a key resource for pre- and post-doctoral researchers and help to maintain a well-managed and organized laboratory. You will learn a variety of new techniques and will be encouraged to engage in an independent project that will propel your career goals in neuroscience research.

The general tasks of a Research Technician include 1) management of our extensive mouse colony, 2) genotyping, 3) procurement of lab supplies and new equipment, 4) general organization of the laboratory, and 5) writing safety and animal protocol updates. Project-specific work may include experiments using in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, confocal or two-photon imaging, stereotaxic surgical techniques for injection of neuronal tracers, or in-vivo imaging of mice through surgically-implanted cranial windows.

You will have unique opportunities to advance your research career. These include the following:

  • Participation in weekly journal and data talks

  • Opportunities to attend lectures and seminars within Mass Eye and Ear and the greater Harvard neuroscience communities.

  • One-on-one mentorship from both Dr. Takesian and a group of talented and friendly predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows

Applicants should have prior research experience in mice, a team-centered and collaborative mindset, troubleshooting skills, and excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Interested candidates should send a CV and contact information for 2 individuals who are willing to serve as professional references to Anne_Takesian@meei.harvard.edu

A Bachelors degree in biology, neuroscience, or a closely-related field is required. Proficiency in Matlab programming is a plus. A minimum 2-year commitment to the position is required.
