Dr. Brian Luna is seeking a Research Lab Specialist to join his laboratory. The focus of the lab is the study of antibiotic-resistance bacterial pathogens. The Research Lab Technician should have extensive work with mice; moreover, preferred experience with mouse tail-vein injections, IP injections, and necropsy procedures. Previous experience with bioinformatics, bacterial genetics, DNA cloning and synthetic biology, and tissue culture experience are desired. Other job responsibilities include:

  • Conducts research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols.

  • Prepares graphs and tables of results and clearly reports them.

  • Ready infectious bacterial and fungal organisms for experimentation.

  • Arrange and assemble laboratory reagents, glassware, and equipment for use.

  • Maintains accurate laboratory records, stocks and maintains laboratory supplies

  • Practice basic laboratory safety and provides general laboratory assistance to support research activities.

  • Performs assignments which are non-routine and vary in complexity with minimal direction.

  • Complies data and computes results for a variety of research procedures, tests and techniques.

This is a grant funded, full-time, fixed term position.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree. Master Degree desired

Preferred Experience: Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols, especially with mice.

Minimum Education: Related graduate study, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience: 5 years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience in research specialization with advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures and analysis methods and ability to supervise on a regular or project basis

The research technician will conduct standardized tests and procedures to support the new high throughput Next-Generation Sequencing Platform in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skill with high emphasis on collaboration, a meticulous attention to details, competent at working independently, and the ability to easily adapt to a wide scope of projects. Preferred Qualifications: * 2 years of experience working in a molecular laboratory. * Experience with high throughput molecular biology techniques. * Bachelor's degree in molecular biology related field. * Proficient in pipetting. * Capable of operating both Microsoft and Mac operating system computers. * Working knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and protocols. Responsibilities: * Preparers experimental materials using laboratory protocols and safety guidelines. * Performs a variety of Next-Generation sequencing procedures, tests, and techniques. * Maintains accurate and up-to-date laboratory records of procedures used to conduct experiments. * Ability to accurately convert measurements and prepare chemical solutions for experimental use. * Ability to understand and perform protocols with high degree of consistency. * Maintains facilities in orderly and operative condition. * Monitors inventory, orders new supplies, and maintains safety of equipment, samples, and data. * In the event of an emergency, the candidate will be required to report to duty. * Conducts literature research to assist in the planning and design of experiments. * Maintains laboratory safety and appropriate biosafety certifications to have the ability to handle laboratory materials in accordance with the USC Biosafety Office. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work in a team-oriented environment and provide cutting-edge high throughput genomics services to the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, and its affiliates.
