Overview

An advanced-level scientist position is available in the laboratory of Brent Orr, MD, PhD in the department of Pathology. Research in the Orr laboratory focuses on molecular classification of pediatric brain tumors. Specifically, the laboratory uses methylation arrays and next generation sequencing (NGS) to perform non-biased classification of brain tumors.

To succeed in this position, you will need to have a deep understanding of molecular assay development. Experience or understanding of NGS technology is helpful.

Future opportunities for this position may also include proteomics and quantitative image analysis. Applicants with data analysis experience (R or python) will be given preference.

Responsibilities

In this position, you will be responsible for design and implementation of orthogonal assays including fluorescence in situ hybridization, sequencing assays, immunohistochemistry, and other routine pathology assays to validate the molecular classification.

Minimum Education

Staff Scientist

  • A Ph.D. in an appropriate scientific field is required

Research Lab Specialist

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate scientific field is required.

Minimum Experience

Staff scientist

  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant and productive (combined) years postdoctoral research associate or five (5) years of combined academic experience at the postdoctoral level or above.

Research Lab Specialist

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience, with at least five (5) years at the Sr. Research Tech level, is required with a Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant post-degree work experience, with at least (5) years at the Sr. Research Tech level, is required with a Master's degree
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience including post-doctoral and/or technical staff experience is required with a Ph.D

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for managing Memphis laboratory, operating key critical instruments, daily quality control, and maintaining all lab related records. * The Lab Supervisor is also responsible to administer quality control for product manufactured at the Memphis facility. * Assist Quality & Compliance Manager and be his/her backup in absence. KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Laboratory (60%) * Operates key critical instruments as needed. * Provides support for the daily operation of production units. * Supervises and trains laboratory technicians as well as trains shift lab-operators as needed. * Defines sampling schedules for incoming material, in-process material, and finished product. * Controls product and raw material specifications. * Develops, improves, and monitors performance of laboratory analytical equipment and procedures. * Manages laboratory facilities, instruments, computer systems and laboratory supplies. * Ensures that laboratory is clean and organized, instruments are functioning properly, and be proactively ready for customer or visitor or FDA audits. * Manages Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). * Troubleshoots and repairs laboratory instruments. * Conducts quarterly USP/FCC and EPA analyses using third party laboratories. * Ensure that product is within specifications. Develop and implement chemical process and product improvements to ensure continued safe, productive, and cost effective operation of the plant. Initiate team efforts to meet plant quality, safety, and production goals by troubleshooting and solving existing process/product problems. * Conducting testing on plant's new projects to increase production, improve safety, and improve asset utilization through quality and efficiency gains. Quality Control (40%) * Supervises quality control system to ensure all raw materials and finished products are analyzed in a safe and efficient manner. * Conducts new incoming material qualifications. * Responsible for the quality of the Memphis finished products, and conducting investigation to quality related incidents. * Leads introduction and scale-up of new products and product improvements. * Leads cGMP compliance programs including stability testing, COA verification, air and water testing, and analytical validations.
