The Research Laboratory Assistant is accountable for all aspects of routine equipment and lab maintenance (such as cleaning glassware, counter tops, and equipment). Responsible for performing safety maintenance and maintaining safety records, checking temperatures and temperature monitoring equipment, and ensuring proper inventory, storage and/or disposal of reagents, chemicals and biohazard materials. Assists with processing and shipping of clinical research samples. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in The Methodist Mission, Vision and Values.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Some experience in a Laboratory environment.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic.
Ability to read and follow moderately complex written instructions.
Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
Ability to operate standard office equipment.
Ability to learn basic medical terminology and specimen processing requirements.
Ability to work unsupervised.
Proficient in basic computer skills.
Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' work flow.
Key Job Responsibilities
Performs daily maintenance, cleaning, and/or decontamination of laboratory equipment and common laboratory areas; and maintain appropriate documentation.
Performs daily and weekly safety maintenance checks for all laboratories as required by DNV, CLIA and OSHA, and applicable local, state and federal regulations; and maintains appropriate documentation.
Monitors temperatures and temperature monitoring equipment, including but not limited to: trouble shooting, installation, and calibration verification.
Maintains proper storage and inventories of reagents, supplies and chemicals; and timely removal of biohazard and sharps waste; and maintain appropriate documentation.
Identifies need for maintenance, repairs, and/or cleaning to be performed by Facilities Services, Environmental Services, or Biomedical Services.
Processes and ships clinical research samples according to study protocols and applicable DOT/IATA regulations.
Performs other job duties as assigned or requested.
Must be able to react quickly in emergency situations.
Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 25 lbs. periodically throughout the shift.
Must be able to stand, walk, climb stairs, sit in one place, squat and kneel periodically throughout shift.
Must be able to reach, bend, and twist periodically throughout shift.
Use of hands for gripping and squeezing, as well as repetitive hand to wrist motion.
