Facebook Reality Labs is a world leader in the design of virtual and augmented reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative researchers with a passion for technology to develop next generation haptics for our research location in Redmond, WA. The focus of this role is the design and control of wearable haptic displays. This includes mechanical design and modeling of haptic actuators, instrumentation of mechatronic systems relating control inputs to tactile outputs and mechanical impedances, and implementation of control architectures and laws to maximize transparency. We seek a PhD candidate in mechanical, electrical, or control systems engineering, and a strong background in modeling, analysis, estimation, and haptic control.

This internship is sixteen (16) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and execute cutting-edge research to explore transparent haptic displays with applications to augmented and virtual reality

Collaborate with other researchers, engineers, and artists to prototype hardware and software solutions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • In the process of obtaining a PhD degree in the field of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control systems engineering, or related technical field.

Currently enrolled in a full-time PhD program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship.

Experience with building wearable haptic displays

Experience with hydraulics or fluidics

Experience in designing tactile or traditional impedance-type control algorithms

Strong publishing record in haptics, estimation, control, and dynamics systems

Excellent research skills involving defining problems, exploring solutions, and analyzing results

Proficiency with Matlab, Simulink, and C++

Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Must be available for 12 or 16 week internship between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with VR/AR systems

Knowledge of haptic perception and standard psychophysical techniques

These roles are focused on the research and development of optical components and systems towards building advanced virtual reality display systems. In particular we welcome PhD students in optical science or engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or similar. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year. RESPONSIBILITIES * Explore application of nano -scale optical structures for controlling the propagation of light in AR display applications Create new tools and methods for analyzing optical responses with novel structures and combinations. Perform trade studies of achievable performance in selected display architectures Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team to create and test new optics concepts for AR displays The type of work should be publishable research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences.
