The Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) Research Team brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of AR and VR, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today.

The Facebook Open Research and Transparency (FORT) Team is under FRL. We are looking for a skilled and motivated research intern to join our team.

Successful candidates for this role are expected to advance the frontiers of privacy-preserving technologies and develop state-of-the-art methods for multidisciplinary fields. They will work closely with team mates and cross functional partners to facilitate novel research as well as implement, design, and test privacy methods and related infrastructure.

Our internships are twelve (12), sixteen (16) or twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Research Intern, FRL Privacy Research (PhD) Responsibilities

  • Conduct research to advance the state-of-the-art privacy enhancement techniques.

Contribute research that is relevant and can be applied to FRL and other Facebook product development.

Engage and collaborate with the research communities within and outside of FRL Research.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields.

Experience with state-of-the-art practices and methodologies in data security and privacy such as differential privacy, secure multi-party computing, homomorphic encryption, etc.

2+ years of experience working with Python.

Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.

Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op.

Demonstrated software engineer experience via an internship, research/work experience, coding competitions, or PhD papers.

Track record of achieving results, including first-authored publications.

Our ideal candidate will be curious, adaptable, and a quick learner that thrives in a fast-paced environment. <br></p><p>Reporting to R&amp;D Director and senior scientific team, the primary responsibility is to aid in the development of new products and testing methods. The internship will last for 10-12 weeks, with the opportunity to renew on a quarterly basis. Interns in Research and Development will:</p><p><br></p><ul> <li>Conduct physical testing of products whenever required such as pH, Viscosity, specific gravity.</li> <li>Prepare specimens and samples for analysis.</li> <li>Assist with maintenance organization and general housekeeping of the R&amp;D laboratory.</li> <li>Ensure laboratory stocks of raw materials and consumables are maintained.</li> <li>Maintain written and electronic records of laboratory experiments.</li> <li>Ensure safety procedures are followed.</li> <li>Record test data and interpret results.</li> <li>Conduct laboratory work to good laboratory practices.</li> <li>Conduct work in a safe and compliant manner.</li> <li>Contribute to laboratory improvements.</li> <li>Complete other duties as assigned.</li> </ul><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><p>This position is ideal for a candidate who enjoys working in a hands-on technical role within an R&amp;D team. The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:</p><ul> <li>Current or upcoming enrollment in undergraduate program at accredited college, community college or university in the Greater Seattle Metropolitan Area.</li> <li>Pursuing an undergraduate degree in chemistry, biology, chemical engineering, or applicable science discipline.</li> <li>Able to adapt and respond to the needs of a growing organization conducting R&amp;D activities.</li> <li>Proficiency with software applications such as MS Office Suite and Google suite required.</li> <li>Ability to work up to +15 hours per week.</li> <li>Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at time of application.</li> <li>21 years of age or older.</li> <li>Be authorized to work in the U.S.</li> </ul><p>Positions require standing, repetitive movement, bending and twisting, and using hands to handle objects; exposure to sustained noise levels; exposure to a variety of food allergens; exposure to hazards such as machinery, slippery floors, and ladders. Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to complete a number of regular tasks.</p><p><strong>Benefits</strong></p><p>This a part-time, hourly position, with a starting wage of $15/hr.
