Facebook Reality Labs are a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative research interns with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display and imaging systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. These roles are focused on the research and development of optical components and systems towards building advanced virtual reality display systems. In particular we welcome PhD students in optical science or engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or similar.

Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Explore application of nano -scale optical structures for controlling the propagation of light in AR display applications

Create new tools and methods for analyzing optical responses with novel structures and combinations. Perform trade studies of achievable performance in selected display architectures

Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team to create and test new optics concepts for AR displays

The type of work should be publishable research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Optical Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field

Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship
2+ years experience in nanophotonics, photonic crystals, plasmonics, or metamaterials
2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab and Python
1+ years experience with electromagnetic simulation software such as Lumerical, Meep, Comsol or S4
1+ years experience with experimental optics and conducting laboratory work (i.e., demonstrated ability to construct proof-of-concept systems and to evaluate performance)

Familiar with processes and tools used for fabricating and testing nanophotonic structures and components

Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects

Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications

RESPONSIBILITIES * Develop next generation AR/VR display prototypes with an emphasis on both modeling and prototyping of the new concepts. Explore the application of one of the following - polarization concepts, nano or micro optics, or geometric optics design. The position will have an emphasizing the development of advanced simulations and prototyping to prove new concepts and the perceptual impact of those concepts. Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team and provide creative leadership on computational display and imaging technologies. The type of work should be publishable research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Pursuing a Masters or PhD in the field of Optical Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship 1+ years experience with geometric, physical optics, or micro-optics, emphasizing modeling and hardware prototyping Demonstrated ability in optical design software (e.g., proficiency with Zemax, CODE V, or similar) 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Mathematica, or similar Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Experience with non-sequential ray tracing, especially with general-purpose analysis tools such as FRED or ASAP Experience with measuring and modeling optical scatter Experience with stray light analysis Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications Facebook Redmond WA
