The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a Research Instructor position in Dr. Avril Somlyo's Smooth Muscle Somlyo Laboratory.

The NIH research focuses on the discovery of the contribution and the mechanism of action of our recently identified p90 ribosomal S6 kinase to the maintenance of basal tone, contractility and hypertension when activated by agonists and increased vascular intraluminal pressure. Outcomes will lay the groundwork for the future development of pharmaceuticals to treat smooth muscle-based diseases and will also increase our basic understanding of smooth muscle contractility.

The Research Instructor will be responsible for the development of hypotheses, study design, performance of studies, data analysis and manuscript preparation. Experience with contractility measurements of isolated or permeabilized blood vessels from normal and transgenic mice following neurohumoral or mechanical stimuli or following the introduction of activatory or inhibitory peptides is essential.

A preference will be given to candidates with experience in pressure myography of arteries; biochemical assays to identify signaling pathways including gel electrophoresis, western blotting, immuno-precipitation, Bio-Id, kinase assays; immuno-histochemistry and confocal microscopy; live cell imaging of Ca2+, pH in resistance vessels; molecular biology and cell culture skills including cell transfection of cells and blood vessels using adenoviral constructs to silence proteins of interest. As well, experience with mouse husbandry is preferred.
