Research & Instruction Librarian

Job Description

Summary/objective

The Research & Instruction Librarian provides reference assistance, as well as detailed research and advisory service. The Research & Instruction Librarian provides one-on-one and group bibliographic instruction for students and faculty of the Randolph College community, as well as supporting the first year program and teaching a for-credit interdisciplinary course on library research methods and information literacy. The Lipscomb Library website is designed and maintained by the Research & Instruction Librarian as part of the Library's information service. Collaborates with the Daytime Circulation Supervisor and Director of the Library to provide outreach services to the Randolph College community.

Primary Duties

  • Assists Randolph College students and faculty with their information and resource needs, provides quick reference and detailed research advice

  • Develops and maintains library references services including the creation of instruction guides

  • Prepares and teaches classes in library instruction, individually tailoring classes to the specific needs of the instructor as well as the resource needs of the discipline

  • Designs and maintains the Lipscomb Library website as a portal for the information needs of Randolph College faculty and students

  • Develops good working relationships with Randolph faculty to meet their informational needs for student instruction and faculty research projects

  • Provides instructional support for the College's first year program

  • Teaches a for-credit interdisciplinary course on library research methods and information literacy

  • Staffs Library reference desk

  • Provides faculty support for creating and using affordable and open education resources in the classroom

Other Duties

  • Sets priorities for multiple tasks and see projects through to completion

  • Supervises library interns when applicable

  • Performs duties as required of faculty members at Randolph College, including but not limited to attendance at monthly Faculty meetings, Convocation, and Commencement; and faculty committee assignments

  • Maintains current professional and technical knowledge through training and other continuing education opportunities

  • Represents the Library and the College at regional, state, and national library association meetings and forums

  • Any new duties as determined by the evolution of the position

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, instruction manuals, and equivalent materials. Ability to prepare memos, reports, and essays using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Ability to communicate distinctly.

Travel required

Travel to state and national conferences or meetings for professional development is expected, but infrequent.

Required education and experience

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program

  • Proficiency with library computer applications, and experience using social media platforms

  • Experience using library support services such as LibGuides, EBSCO EDS, and other common database platforms

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google applications

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Able to adapt to constantly changing technology

  • Ability to set priorities
