The Research Greenhouse Specialist in Agriculture serves as a 100% FTE, 12 month professional with primary responsibility for the development, implementation and supervision of plant care protocols for research and educational programs and projects. The Research Greenhouse Specialist is one of a team of professionals in the Plant Care Facility, a year-round operation focusing on providing services to faculty, staff, students and external stakeholders.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Greenhouse Research Support

• Work closely with Greenhouse Managers for daily plant care and maintenance protocols for research and educational projects.

• Provide greenhouse users information on PCF Storeroom supplies, soil mixes and media, and general greenhouse policies and best practices.

• Monitor and scout for insect pests and disease symptoms weekly. Create weekly scouting reports and track beneficial insect populations.

• Grow, maintain, and propagate plant material for the horticultural plant collections and educational programming.

• Assist in autoclaving plant materials as needed following transgenic protocols.

• Support other PCF staff in daily operations.

Greenhouse Facility Management

• Conduct PCF Storeroom inventory and organization weekly. Maintain weekly PCF Storeroom hours to assist Greenhouse Users with supply requests.

• Identify and investigate equipment and/or facility issues within the Plant Care Facility as requested.

• Notify and update the PCF Assistant Director of mechanical, equipment, or facility issues and repairs promptly.

• Apply and remove whitewash, seasonally.

• Service the evaporative cooling systems, seasonally.

Other

• Occasional weekend or holiday watering following rotation

• Other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Required:

• Bachelor Degree in Crop Sciences, Horticulture, or related field
• 1+ years of greenhouse experience

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS:

This is a full-time 100%, 12-month, academic professional appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The salary range for this position starts at $40,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
