Job Description:

To design and carry out research in the areas of DNA damage, DNA repair, and DNA structure-induced genetic instability.

General Notes

This position is located off-campus at Dell Pediatric Research Institute, 1400 Barbara Jordan Blvd., Austin, TX 78723 in the lab of Dr. Karen Vasquez, Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and evaluate experiments to achieve specific objectives in research projects. Read and assist in writing manuscripts/review articles, compile figures and tables using the data obtained for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Assist with lab maintenance. Assist with ordering and maintaining chemical and supply inventories. Maintain lab safety, including but not limited to: ensuring proper waste disposal, assisting with lab safety self-evaluations, maintaining safety records and protocols, and ensuring personnel have completed safety training.

  • Present research data and findings in public and private forums (seminars/laboratory meetings).

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or related field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in the molecular mechanisms involved in DNA repair. Experience with ChIP assays, tissue culture, biochemical techniques, subcloning of plasmid vectors, DNA repair assays, and protein-DNA interaction studies.

Salary Range

$23,184 + depending on qualifications

The position may be renewable after one year based upon availability of funding, work performance, and progress toward research goals. This position will be located at Dell Medical School as part of the Neurology Department in the Freeman Lab. The Freeman laboratory conducts research focusing on the application of advanced imaging and computing techniques to better predict patient outcomes and unveil the mechanisms driving disability progression in MS. Dr. Freeman is also involved in various community-based projects aiming to improve the long-term outcomes of people with MS by helping them become and stay active consistently. Responsibilities * Perform quality control of neuroimaging data. * Perform image analysis using specific neuroimaging software under the supervision of lab manager (after specific training). * Test neuroimaging software developed in house. * Support on-going research projects. * Assist with subject recruitment. * Obtain informed consent from study participants. * Conduct study assessments: Schedule, track, and conduct study assessments over the telephone and in-person with enrolled subjects. * Perform Data Entry, Maintenance, and Monitoring. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience or relevant academic area. Must be proficient in basic statistics, Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint. The candidate must be well-organized, professional, and follow through with tasks without significant oversight. Must have excellent organizational and time management skills.
