The person hired for the position of Research Engineer will work in a cross-functional team-based environment. The engineer will work as part of a mechanical engineering group, which has a wide variety of skill sets in mechanical design, system engineering, electromechanical systems, product/part design (IoT devices) and prototyping. The successful candidate will have a passion for practical mechanical design along with electromechanical skills. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop technologies and products that promote rapid commercialization of new 3M businesses.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Development of electromechanical systems that may include sensors, battery enclosures, light pipes, touchscreens, input peripherals, molded components, and IoT devices
Interdisciplinary product and technology development, including interfacing with industrial designers, electrical, firmware, and software engineering personnel
Collaborate with research teams in corporate research and business labs to build new capabilities and technologies
Leverage design and prototyping skills to develop proof of concept demonstrations
MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related fields from an accredited university
3+ years of systems development and product development experience in a private, public, government or military environment
3+ years experience using 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Geomagic, Fusion 360)
Experience in mechanical engineering sub-disciplines such as mechatronics, additive manufacturing / 3D Printing and system engineering
Experience with plastics, sheet metal, injection molding, machining, rapid prototyping, DFMA, and robust design
Adaptability: broad interest in science and technology with a willingness and interest in expanding into new fields and learning new techniques and skills
Experience with Programming Languages Python, MATLAB, and/or LabVIEW
Experience with Scrum framework
Location: Maplewood, MN
Travel: May include up to 10% domestic
Relocation: May be authorized
