Ford's research and advanced engineering organization is seeking qualified candidates to join our team to develop control and diagnostic algorithms that support future diesel programs. The diesel controls team is a vibrant group of engineers responsible for researching the control systems and diagnostic strategies that help make Ford vehicles environmentally responsible while delivering the performance customers expect. Successful candidates for this position will have demonstrated experience designing and delivering controls for dynamic systems and a passion for attaining a deep understanding of interrelated vehicle systems.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, test, and validate on-board diagnostic monitors for diesel programs, including fuel system, air path and exhaust aftertreatment

  • Research, develop, test and validate engine and aftertreatment control algorithms for diesel programs

  • Analyze and model dynamic systems for diesel engine and emission controls

  • Create software requirements and specifications

  • Deploy control algorithms to embedded controllers (rapid prototyping and production ECU)

  • Work closely with customers in vehicle programs to validate control and diagnostic solutions and develop requirements for new features

  • Apply advanced control methods including model predictive control and machine learning

Basic Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering discipline preference for degrees with emphasis on control systems
  • 3+ years of experience developing control algorithms for mechanical or electrical systems (in lieu of 3+ years of experience, will accept a Ph.D. degree and 1+ year of relevant professional experience)
  • 3+ years of experience with MATLAB/Simulink tools for data analysis, model development or software development (in lieu of 3+ years of experience will accept a Ph. D. degree and 1+ year of relevant professional experience)
  • 1+ year of experience developing power train controls or diagnostic algorithms (research thesis and academic experience considered)

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering discipline preference for degrees with emphasis on control systems

  • 1+ year of diesel power train system experience or related coursework

  • 1+ year of experience with in-vehicle testing, including on-road and emissions lab

  • Familiarity with control development and calibration tools including dSpace, Vector CANalyzer, ETAS INCA, and ATI Vision

  • Demonstrated data analysis and control/diagnostic feature simulation skills

  • Working knowledge of programming in C/C++ and/or Python

  • Familiarity with systems engineering based problem solving

  • Experience in advanced controls, signal processing and machine learning

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills

  • Proven ability to work well with others as part of a diverse global team
