Job Description:

A recognized subject matter expert in retail merchandising processes and solutions, the successful candidate will collaborate with other research associates to identify and create a body of research and analysis on topics of most importance to our large clientele of leading retailers and vendors in various regions of the world.

The selected candidate will advise Gartner clients on merchandising processes and technologies supporting merchandising as well as a wide variety of issues including retail consumer trends, retail business and technology trends, emerging innovations in retail technologies, IT strategy for achieving major retail objectives and technology solutions for those objectives.

Who you are:

  • Good working knowledge of consumer trends and the digitalization of the Retail industry, with an understanding of the concept of merchandising for 'unified retail commerce'.

  • Deep familiarity with the drivers, challenges, processes, and technologies related to retail merchandising processes. Experience of recent implementation/s of a merchandising system, for example, for planning, allocation, space management would be advantageous.

  • Recent experience (within the past three years) of working in the retail industry, preferably with a well-known multichannel retailer based in or having operations in NA or Europe.

What you'll do:

Work Collaboratively

  • A key requirement for this job is to work collaboratively with members of the retail team and other Gartner research associates, such as those in the supply chain and digital commerce teams, to develop research and insights to advise our retail clients

  • Assisting and providing support to other parts of Gartner teams such as Sales, Executive Programs and Consulting is also expected

  • The research will also include arranging and attending vendor briefings, vendor events and client meetings to inform Gartner's retail research positions.

Conducting Research

  • Working in a peer review structure to prepare thought-leading actionable research to advise clients through inquiry, published documents, and presentations

General Research:

  • Retail consumer trends and customer expectations in the shopping process and their impact on merchandising processes.

  • Critical issues that retailers are prioritising to accomplish the business mission i.e. what problems, especially customer problems, are retailers are trying to solve; you will develop research plans based on capturing our retailer clients' needs of today and the future

  • Retail business and technology trends

  • Application of established and emerging technologies both in everyday retail merchandising operations as well as in retail innovation

Specific areas of research focus:

  • Major merchandising processes and systems

  • Understanding of core merchandising processes such as:

  • PO generation and management

  • Inventory management

  • Price management and execution

  • Item hierarchy and item file maintenance

  • Allocation and replenishment

  • Good working knowledge of major merchandise planning processes such as:

  • Merchandise Financial Planning

  • Assortment Planning

  • Open to buy

  • Pricing

  • Promotion

  • Knowledge of grocery category management would be advantageous:

  • Category review

  • Macro space planning

  • Micro space planning

  • Planograms

  • Use of syndicated data

  • Knowledge of digital merchandising would be advantageous

Presenting

  • You will be required to speak / present as a subject matter expert at Gartner events including Gartner Conferences and CIO Summits

  • As appropriate, you will be required to participate in in-person client engagements which will require speaking to C Level Retail executives

Engagement with Media

  • Assist in the promotion of Gartner research with the media covering the Retail industry to promote the Gartner brand

Gartner's global client base and operations means that you will be required to advise retail industry CIOs and other IT executives and their staffs in multiple time zones and countries

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in the Retail industry

  • Excellent general understanding of how information technology can support customers in the shopping process as well as the back-office retailing business processes

  • Understanding the retail context in different regions of the globe: The Americas, Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific

  • Possessing analytical, lateral and critical thinking skills: seeking out and piecing together fragments of information, extrapolating, building and applying conceptual models, recognizing patterns and drawing conclusions from partial data

  • Ability to adapt quickly and 'think on your feet' when the situation calls for it

  • Excellent writing skills, presentation, and verbal communication skills, with ability to present confidently in front of C Level Retail executives

  • Significant exposure to C-suite, be seen as a trusted C-Level advisor and will be comfortable presenting and challenging

Desirable

  • Knowledge of grocery category management would be advantageous:

  • Knowledge of digital merchandising would be advantageous

  • Experience in role of Enterprise Architect or Business Analyst with merchandising experience is a plus
