The W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation invites applications for a Research Associate. This position will collaborate on the development and completion of scientific analysis and preparation of a manuscript and a book in 2024/25. This position will work in tandem with the PI as well as graduate students to complete scientific papers for a variety of research projects. This position will also oversee daily internal and external projects by managing grant funding, equipment, personnel within the University of Montana and managing NSF-funded projects with collaborating students, staff and faculty at collaborating Universities and Institutions.

Position Details

  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

  • Salary for this position is $52,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, ecology, biology, or a related natural resource science field.

  • Demonstrated experience writing and publishing scientific papers.

  • Experience in applying for research funding, permitting, animal capture and handling permitting procedures, funding progress report writing, and managing scientific databases.

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and scientific and administrative staff.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the scientific process including both the scientific method and its application to ecological research.

  • Proven ability to conduct scientific literature reviews, collect and manage databases and data sets, MS-level skills in analysis of quantitative ecological data.

  • Practical statistical analysis experience with MS Excel and statistical programming languages.

  • Ability to work both independently and with a collaborative team using strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong communication skills, i.e. writing and speaking.

  • Computer skills for field-based data collection and desktops to include using research and analysis software.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in an office setting and to work collaboratively with other research staff/graduate students, as well as project and federal agency partners.

  • Demonstrated ability to present research results and project impacts to broad audiences (written and oral).

  • Demonstrated budget and project management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time both in state and out of state, as well as internationally.

  • Established partnerships with partner labs, relationships with Department of Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences staff, faculty, and students, and other UM faculty and staff.

  • Two (2) years' experience in research skills including sampling procedures, data analysis, and report writing.

  • Experience with National Science Foundation grants.
