The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term, Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.

This Research Associate in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) will be part of an established multi-institution team working to develop an online, robust, and distributed system (an open product marketplace) for product manufacturers to ensure a functioning supply market for current and future pandemic response. The incumbent is expected to work as an integral part of the team to develop underlying algorithms which would aid in (1) concurrently pairing product and manufacturing information to willing manufacturers in the supply to fulfill consumer demands; (2) onboarding consumers and manufacturers to the marketplace; and (3) supporting decision making. The developed online marketplace will be able to optimize supply chains and facilitate knowledge sharing to aid consumers and manufacturers in decision-making. In addition to contributing to its development, the Research Associate will support the research team in demonstrating the value of the developed online tool using real-world cases and student-devised business-to-consumer use cases, as well as leading and contributing to publications, reports, and presentations on the work and mentoring of students involved in the project.

MIME comprises over 60 academic faculty and instructors, 20 professional faculty, staff and research associates who support nearly 2000 undergraduate and graduate students. MIME offers undergraduate degrees in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The School of MIME houses a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative group of faculty and staff in Advanced Manufacturing pursuing the broad areas of automation, sensor fusion, smart and sustainable manufacturing, precision manufacturing, materials science, and computational modeling.

Key Responsibilities

70% - Engineering Research:

  • Perform background research and literature reviews.

  • Conduct original and collaborative scientific research in the fields of manufacturing and supply chain management.

  • Process, summarize, and communicate results to collaborators.

  • Assist in preparation of proposals for new research based on research progress/findings.

15% - Publication and Dissemination:

  • Prepare conference and journal article drafts, edit manuscripts, respond to reviewer comments, and coordinate co-author edits and responses to reviewers.

  • Write descriptive sections of reports and manuscripts, describing study areas, data, methods, and results.

  • Assist in preparation and editing of marketing and communication materials.

15% - Assist with supervision and other duties as assigned:

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction for undergraduate and graduate assistants.

  • Attend project meetings with other collaborators to present and discuss progress.

  • Assist with planning and coordination of meetings with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Assist with the software development of some of the open product marketplace components.

What You Will Need

  • Earned Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field AND earned Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

  • Proficiency in communicating technical information in written and spoken English.

  • Experience in preparation of successful conference and journal articles (minimum 3 published).

  • Demonstrated interest in development of software applications.

  • Familiarity with programming languages (preferably Python).

  • Demonstrated interest in promoting and enhancing the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • PhD in Engineering with a focus on manufacturing system and supply chain design.

  • Familiarity with containerized architecture within software development.

  • Experience in using certain software development tools/platforms, such as Git, GitHub, Python, React, .NET C#, VS Code, Docker and Dapr.

  • Experience in supervising/mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
