The College of Engineering School of Civil and Construction Engineering invites applications for a part-time (0.50 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.

The Research Associate will support research and education in the College of Engineering School of Civil and Construction Engineering with focus in the Geomatics Engineering discipline. The Research Associate will be responsible for the administration, design, and execution of field surveys at several monitoring and other research sites. They will support data management, processing, and analysis related to the presentation and publication of rigorous and impactful scientific advancements in the fields of geomatics engineering. They will also perform lab management duties within the laboratory group. Tasks include organizing instrumentation, maintaining safety documentation and compliance, training new users of equipment, managing rental procedures and instruments, and supporting data collection and/or processing for contracted services.

Key Responsibilities

60% - Plan, support, and execute data collection in the field and the lab; Perform data processing, data management and rigorous analysis related to monitoring surveys with terrestrial laser scanners, GNSS, total stations, and other geomatics technologies.

15% - Manage laboratory resources, including instrumentation organization, maintenance of safety documentation and compliance. Train new users of equipment, manage rental procedures and instruments, and support data collection and/or processing for contracted services.

10% - Participate in the preparation and presentation of technical and scientific papers in local, regional, national, and international conferences and scientific journals. Write/assist in writing competitive research proposals. Assist in managing successful research proposals.

5% - Lead geomatics outreach activities.

5% - Continually improve technical and scientific capability through additional formal and informal training related to the field.

5% - Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Provide leadership and direction for undergraduate and graduate assistants.
  • Provide training to undergraduate and graduate students related to research and laboratory/experiment protocol.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, faculty, and students to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive research environment.

What You Will Need

  • PhD in geomatics engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Publication record in peer reviewed journals.
  • Experience with field data collection.
  • Experience with managing large datasets.
  • Experiencing processing point cloud datasets for change analysis
  • Experience working effectively with diverse groups of students, researchers, and staff.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate/graduate students, either formally or informally.
  • Evidence of submission of competitive research proposals.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

The incumbent will typically have flexibility in their specific working hours, but is expected to be available during normal business hours for meetings and discussions related to projects. They will periodically need to participate in field work, which may sometimes include extended periods of standing and traversing uneven/rugged terrain. The candidate will periodically travel to conferences and scientific meetings.
