This position will be in support of Diagnostics and Surveillance Department, within the Directorate of DoD Infectious Diseases, located at the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, MD.

HJF is seeking a Research Associate II to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. May exercises technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. May provide limited guidance to lower-level Research Associates.

Our research activities include the study of the immune response to infectious diseases, as well as the development and evaluation of novel vaccines and therapeutics. We also support large scale immunological surveillance studies monitoring exposure and immune response to viral diseases. Our focus is on vector borne viral diseases such as Dengue as well as on respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

We are looking for a motivated individual with an interest in immunology and infectious diseases, who is comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment as part of a team as well as individually. This position provides an excellent opportunity for learning and growth in fields of infectious disease and immunology.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. Responsibilities

  • Performs routine data analysis and basic interpretation and verifies and corrects data entry.

  • Trains junior laboratory staff in laboratory techniques and processes, as needed.

  • Conducts research in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff.

  • Performs complex laboratory tests, determinations, and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches.

  • Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation.

  • Analyzes and prepares reagent and/or assay product documentation. Organizes and procures needed reagents, performs experiments, analyzes data, and documents results.

  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

  • Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree required.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability of following an SOP with minimal supervision.

  • Capability of working in a BSL-2 environment for cell culturing, specimen processing, and other laboratory routines.

  • Capability of performing flow cytometry, PCR, ELISA, and other cellular or molecular skills is not a requirement but a plus.

  • Ability of performing data interpretation and analysis.

  • Ability of developing assays and write SOPs.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
