The laboratory of Dr. Catherine Armbruster in the Department of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking candidates for a full-time Research Associate I. The Armbruster lab investigates ecology and evolution of opportunistic pathogens in the built environment and in human infections. The candidate will be responsible for providing technical and administrative support for the lab. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. Opportunities for independent projects are available depending on interest and experience.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Performing eukaryotic cell culture (including with cystic fibrosis airway epithelial cells and macrophages), bacterial genetics, strain propagation, and maintenance of bacterial strain and eukaryotic cell libraries.

  • Designing research experiments and research protocols.

  • Organizing and analyzing data, preparing presentations, and writing technical reports.

  • Compliance with chemical and laboratory safety regulations.

  • Assisting with training new personnel.

  • Ordering, and receiving reagents, supplies, and equipment.

  • Preparing stocks of laboratory reagents, including molecular biology buffers and growth media for bacterial and eukaryotic cells.

You should demonstrate:

  • Strong oral and communications skills.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, or related field is required.
  • 1-3 years' experience in cell culture, microscope, or quantitative image analysis.
