About the role:

The Hoffmann Lab at the Gladstone Institute of Virology is seeking a motivated individual specializing in, in vivo research to join our dynamic team as a Research Associate. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting our multidisciplinary research efforts to develop our mRNA- and nanoparticle-based vaccine technologies against a wide range of infectious diseases. The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting research in mice to evaluate vaccine candidates, including ordering and maintaining mouse cohorts, immunization, bleeding, harvesting tissues, and general care of the animals. They will work together with members of the lab to develop immunization schedules and schemes and will carry out the immunization experiments and analysis. This position also involves biochemical characterization of the immune responses including ELISAs, in vitro neutralization assays, cloning, and protein purification.

What you will do:

  • Planning and conducting laboratory animal experiments in mice including ordering, management and coordination of multiple projects, scheduling, communication with researchers regarding experimental plans and progress status, monitoring animal health status, maintaining facility supplies, vaccine formulation, immunization via various routes (IV, IM, SQ, IN, IP), anesthetic solution formation, anesthesia (inhalant, ip), bleeding, measuring body weight, tissue harvest, euthanasia, serum preparation, single cell preparation for splenocytes

  • Molecular biology tasks including cloning (PCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing and validating constructs, etc.) and plasmid preparation

  • Transfection and maintenance of mammalian cell lines

  • Protein and VLP purification (affinity and size exclusion chromatography)

  • Western blotting, SDS-PAGE, ELISAs, and other assays

  • General lab duties including buffer and reagent preparation

  • Maintaining accurate records and organized records of experimental procedures and results

  • Collaborate with team members on various research projects

  • Other duties as assigned

What you will need:

  • BA/BS or MS/MA in Biology or related field

  • At least two years of experience in a biology research laboratory

  • At least two years of extensive hands-on experience with handling of and research activities in mice

  • Some molecular biology experience

  • Outstanding communication skills, attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work on several projects in parallel as part of a team

What is preferred:

  • A strong background in immunology, virology, and molecular biology

  • Extensive experience conducting vaccine, virology, or immunology research in mice

  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture and molecular biology (cloning, protein expression and purification, Western blotting, SDS-PAGE, ELISAs, etc.)

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Hiring Range:

RA I $25-$29/hr

RA II $66,560- $78,306K

RA III $72,914 - $85,782
