The purpose of this position is to conduct research on topics affecting municipal government and assist with the Association’s outreach efforts. Duties include but are not limited to:
Assists the Research and Federal Relations Manager to develop, coordinate, and promote the Association’s research activities, including: assisting with conducting studies, developing research reports, and responding to general requests for information. Conducts policy research and analysis on major state and federal legislative issues affecting cities; collects information necessary to assess the impact of legislative proposals on GMA member cities; and prepares reports on a variety of topics affecting municipal operations in a timely manner. Responds to requests for information from city officials, state agencies, the general public, and others in a timely manner.
Conducts surveys to gather data from member cities on municipal operations and practices. Oversees the GMA Local Government Practicum program, working with city managers, university faculty, and students as assigned. Assist the Research and Federal Relations Manager to update the GMA Data Tools annually and coordinate data literacy and storytelling training.
Conducts visits to member cities in conjunction with GMA’s outreach program. Assists with the development and implementation of GMA virtual and in-person workshops, information sessions and regional meetings. Communicates with city officials, professional associations, state/ federal agencies, university officials, utility companies, consultants, outside agencies, the public, and others as needed to coordinate activities and exchange information.
Provides support to the Federal Policy Council, Legislative Policy Council, Member Services Advisory Council, Georgia City Solutions and other departments as part of a team of GMA staff members. Represents GMA at meetings and on committees as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in public administration, urban studies, city planning, or related field (Master’s degree preferred); two years of experience involving research in local government; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Experience working in local government is ideal.
