Research Associate

Location Novato, California Apply

BioMarin is the world leader in delivering therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with serious and life-threatening rare genetic diseases. We target diseases that lack effective therapies and affect relatively small numbers of patients, many of whom are children. These conditions are often inherited, difficult to diagnose, progressively debilitating and have few, if any, treatment options. BioMarin will continue to focus on advancing therapies that are the first or best of their kind.

BioMarin's Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. The Analytical Sciences department, a part of Process Sciences within TechOps, supports all assay needs in Tech Ops. Our scientists and associates are experts in analytics of small molecules, peptides, proteins/enzymes, and gene therapy agents. We develop assays to follow the quality attributes of our products, support IND and BLA applications, we assess the capability of our processes by analyzing in-process samples all the way from bioreactors through purification steps to the drug substance and developrelease assays for transfer to Quality. We are also instrumental in time-critical analysis support to Manufacturing as needed. Come join our team and make a meaningful impact on patients' lives.

The Analytical Sciences department at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. is seeking a skilled Analytical Scientistat the Research Associate level to join a team focused on supporting gene therapy & enzyme replacement therapy. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, independent and critical thinker who has proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and fast-paced environment, and solid communication skills.

The candidate will be responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, managing sample testing, compiling sample testing results, and developing new analytical methods and assays. The selected candidate should possess excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills and be a self-starter willing to work efficiently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

An ideal candidate will have experience in standard chromatographic measurements and an interest in learning about mass spectrometry based assays. A good scientific understanding of protein chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry is essential. Hands-on experience in analytical method development anddata handling is a big plus.

  • Execution of relevant experiments to support sample testing and development of analytical assays for biologics in development.

  • Development of analytical methods using size exclusion, ion exchange, and reverse phase chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and gas chromatography.

  • Provide concise and quantitative analysis of data and interpretation of experimental results.

  • Ensure laboratory equipment have current calibration and preventative maintenance documentations.

  • Report progress to the manager on a regular basis on each program.

  • Write up methods, qualification reports, results & share with collaborators and supervisor; present data proactively and regularly in group meetings; communicate plans and results to collaborators and manager iteratively.

  • Catalogue data/reports electronically in an accessible manner for inspections.

Required Skills:

  • Good understanding of protein chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry

  • Knowledge in standard protein analysis methods

  • Hand-on experience in protein biochemistry (e.g. SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, Immunoprecipitation)

  • Collaborative skills to work in a cross-functional environment

  • Excellent communication, collaboration and writing skills

  • Proven data analysis, interpretation and scientific communication skills

  • Proven flexibility and execution skills to deliver in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment

  • Experience working in a cross-functional environment

Desired Skills:

  • Experienced in the area of mass spectrometry including LC-MS, GC-MS, and MALDI-TOF MS
  • Knowledge of biopharmaceutical development is a plus

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, biochemistry, or chemistry and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or minimal experience with Masters.

VIEW JOBS 6/2/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-08-31T00:00 POSITION SUMMARY The Winer and Furman labs at the Buck Institute are interested in studying how the immune system influences chronic inflammation during aging and age-related disease. We are seeking an independent and highly motivated recent PhD or MD/PhD graduate with a strong background in immunology to begin immediately to study mechanisms of cytokine storm with age using mouse models. POSITION BACKGROUND The Winer lab studies the immune system's influence on chronic inflammation during insulin resistance, which occurs in settings of metabolic syndrome and aging (see sample lab papers: Tsai et al Cell Metab 2018, 922-34; Ghazarian et al Science Immunol 2017, Apr 21; Winer et al Cell Metab 2016, 413-26; Luck et al Cell Metab 2015, 527-42; Winer et al Nature Med 2011, 610-7; Winer et al Nature Med 2009; 921-9). We use immunology, molecular biology, endocrinology, mouse models, and tissue culture assays to elucidate mechanisms by which immune cells and immune molecules influence inflammation in tissues. The Furman lab studies how aging impacts inflammation, using systems-level immunity and applied advanced analytics with artificial intelligence and machine learning to sort through large volumes of data (see sample lab papers: Furman et al Nature Med 2019: 1822-1832; Furman et al Nature Med 2017: 174-184; Furman et al Sci Transl Med 2015, Apr 1). Dr. Furman directs the Bioinformatics core at the Buck Institute. The selected Postdoctoral Fellow will have the unique opportunity to work under the guidance of two experts in immunology on a joint project. The position will involve using multiple approaches in mouse models to better understand cytokine production and regulation in the immune system during cytokine storm in mice. QUALIFICATIONS * Independent and highly motivated recent PhD or MD/PhD graduate with a strong background in immunology * Ambitious with a desire to pursue academic research * Ability to creatively follow their own ideas in addition to working on a high impact project * Prior experience in immunological and molecular assays including immune cell culture assays, flow cytometry, Q-PCR, Western blotting, and ELISA * High volume experience with mouse handling TO APPLY Interested candidates should apply online and include a CV and cover letter including contact information for three professional references. Please direct any questions to: or ABOUT THE BUCK INSTITUTE Our success will ultimately change healthcare. At the Buck, we aim to end the threat of age-related diseases for this and future generations by bringing together the most capable and passionate scientists from a broad range of disciplines to identify and impede the ways in which we age. We are an independent, non-profit institution located in Marin County, CA, with the goal of increasing human healthspan, or the healthy years of life. Globally recognized as the pioneer and leader in efforts to target aging-the number one risk factor for diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cancer, macular degeneration, heart disease, and diabetes-the Buck seeks to help people live better longer.
