The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Per Diem Research Associate 1 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.

The Research Associate 1, SOM supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates with the goal of advancing his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.

  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

  • Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.

  • Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Bachelor's Degree in relevant field

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM-OCULAR MICROBIOLOGY

Department Specific Functions-Diagnostic/Clinical Microbiology

  • During the first 6 months, the Fellow will rotate through all areas of the Ocular Microbiology Clinical Laboratory (bacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology, and molecular diagnostics, reviewing clinical orders, sample set ups, routine, and special stains, culture-depended and culture- independent pathogen recovery and antimicrobial susceptibility results. Fellows are expected to become knowledgeable in the technical, theoretical, and ophthalmic application of both common and unique tests, associated with each of the sections.

  • The Fellow will participate in daily lab plate rounds, and discuss media selection, test selection and their strengths and weakness for rapid and accurate pathogen recovery.

  • The Fellow will provide a monthly presentation and summary on laboratory "plate rounds" detection time, antimicrobial profiles, and clinical correlation (signs and symptoms, imaging) and or select a "current topic" in Laboratory Diagnosis in Ocular Infectious Diseases: Issues and Pearls to be shared with laboratory, research, and clinical staff.

  • Academics-Investigative/Research Microbiology

  • Laboratory and Clinical research and publication are encouraged and supported as part of the fellowship experience. The fellow is expected to a) prepare and present a 60-minute, relevant research presentation for the BPEI Research Core, b) developed a problem-based research project in laboratory diagnosis, pathogen detection, antibiotic resistance, treatment modalities, and or microbial surveillance for publication.

  • The fellow will benefit from an broad and diverse didactic program, including weekly Laboratory and Medical Microbiology Challenges/Unknowns, ocular infectious disease case presentations, journal clubs, and lively research debates and discussions. The fellow will shadow faculty and cornea fellows in the BPEI cornea, external disease and or ER clinics for a minimum of 120 hours.

  • The fellow is required to attend weekly Grand Rounds and encouraged to sit in on morning resident lectures in ophthalmology.

  • The fellow will help curate and maintain a BPEI ocular laboratory infectious disease database incorporating EMR data, imaging, surgical intervention, and ocular therapeutics. A minimal of 100 patient entries over the 12-month period with summary analytics are required as part of the general competency assessment.

  • Ability to work with all levels of laboratory personnel.

Department Specific Qualifications

Education:

Qualified candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree with courses in biology, chemistry, microbiology, vision science, and or medical technology.

We welcome Pre, post residency candidates as well as foreign PhD, MD applicants with interest in ophthalmology, laboratory science, research, and or infectious diseases.

Experience:

General laboratory experience in microbiology and or molecular biology desired, but not required,.
