Overview: Dr. Thomson, Director of Research at the Injury and Violence Prevention Program (IVPP) at VCU, is accepting applications for a research assistant. This position is supported by a 5-year R01 funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Description of the project: This project aims to understand biological markers for callous-unemotional (CU) traits in youth with conduct disorder, and if these biomarkers contribute to the stability of CU traits over time. For more information about IVPP, visit

Duties: Research assistant duties include (but are not limited to): supporting research staff on research and administrative based tasks; recruiting participants by phone and email; conducting baseline and follow-up assessments; study equipment maintenance, set-up, and cleaning; management of study supplies and inventory; supporting cohesion of administrative and research tasks; maintaining and documenting research protocol compliance; coordinating with participants for follow-up assessments and payments; data collection, management, and analysis. This position requires working in rotation on the weekends and some evenings.

Overall research projects are related to addressing cancer prevention and control in socio-economically disadvantaged populations, racial/ethnic subgroups and other groups that bear disproportionate cancer burden in the US and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Exemplar activities include, the completion of general research related tasks such preparation of IRB documents, consenting and interviewing participants, developing intervention materials, transcribing interviews, coordinating information between study sites, writing reports, and assisting with manuscripts, participating in outreach and community education events and other research documents. Promotes NCI cancer education and control initiatives with a major emphasis on reaching minority and medically underserved populations, cancer patients and their families, and health professionals in the geographic areas covered by the OHEDR. Assist researchers in promoting community outreach and engagement cancer research. Promotes the OHEDR's educational activities for the public, cancer survivors and their families and health professionals. The Research Assistant will work on several projects that aim to reduce cancer disparities in underserved populations. Examples of projects include an assessment of the priorities of cancer survivors in the region and surrounding areas, implementation of a physical activity and nutrition intervention for racial/ethnic and rural cancer survivors, and exploring factors related to breast cancer survivors' adherence/nonadherence to cancer treatment. Minimum Qualifications Candidates will need to have a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or closely related fields (e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Epidemiology). Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. A writing sample will be requested. Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills. Previous interactions/communications with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Experience working both independently and collaboratively in a team.
