Are you an early career scientist excited about translational bioproducts research and interested in advancing scale-up solutions that mature laboratory findings to impactful products? Join South Dakota State University (SDSU) as a Research Assistant Professor to facilitate academic bioproducts research and make expert contributions to collaborative projects at the state-of-the-art Dakota BioWorx bioproducts research center. This position will be located on our main campus in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible position.

Over the next decade, (SDSU) aims to double its research productivity to over $120 million in research expenditures and to drive economic development through innovation and regionally relevant outcomes. Bioproducts research in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS) and College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) seeks to answer fundamental questions on microbial and plant metabolic capacities and pathway regulation as well as translation of such capacities to produce value-added and impactful bioproducts with societal and economic benefits.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead fundamental and applied science research projects to enable scale-up and translational bioproducts development. This includes leading and participating in extramural grant applications to secure funding, and publications and technical reports to disseminate information.

  • Be a proactive resource expert to stimulate bioproducts research and translation at SDSU and other SDBOR institutions.

  • Coordinate bioproducts research projects between South Dakota research universities and Dakota BioWorx.

  • Advise and assist Dakota BioWorx on infrastructure development for bioproducts scale-up research.

  • Provide training and outreach on bioproducts technologies to students, interns and other stakeholders.

SALARY RANGE:

Salary for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university's guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. degree in Microbiology or a closely related field completed by start date of appointment.

  • At least one year experience working with bioproducts equipment, in particular fermentation vessels of different scales.

  • Experience in development of bioproducts research projects and grant proposals.

  • Ability or potential to work as a contributing team member, as well as be self-motivated and work independently on research projects.

  • Ability or potential to train students and other researchers in bioproducts-related technologies.

  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Effective organization and time management skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience leading a research project.

  • Relevant work experience in university or industry research.

  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations regarding research, grants and contracts.

  • Proficiency in writing, editing, and reviewing technical documents.

  • Past/current experience as part of a grant recipient team.
