Position Description:

The Department of Plant Pathology at North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND invites interested applicants for a Research Assistant Professor to oversee and conduct the operations of an NSF-funded project to research identifying microbial solutions for sustainable crop management. This position is a non-tenure-faculty track, 12-month, full-time, benefited position, which is renewable annually (depending on funding). The research focus will include (1) the use of biofertilizers for the cultivation of non-legume crops (e.g. corn) in the Dakotas using real-time data; (2) the use of technologies for effective delivery and variable monitoring of crop inputs to manage soil and plant health; (3) a liaison for the project to rural and Native American community; and (4) contribute to building multi-disciplinary research team within NDSU and with other institutions that address crop management.

The Plant Pathology Department has strong ties with other Departments / RECs at NDSU, agricultural companies, and stakeholders, which help successful applicants to establish their research program. Position expectations include: 1) support a research program in crop management; 2) address research needs related to crop management in North Dakota and the region; 3) establish collaborations with researchers in other NDSU departments and RECs, agriculture industry, stakeholders, and other institutions; 4) present and publish findings at scientific conferences; and 4) support and trains graduate and undergraduate students (as needed).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in plant pathology, agricultural engineering, agronomy, or in a related scientific or engineering field (degree must be completed at the time of hire)

  • Interest and ability to develop a research program in the broad areas of crop production and management to support stakeholder needs.

  • Ability to mentor graduate and undergraduate students

  • Experience working independently and in a team to plan, develop, and execute research projects.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially to communicate research with the scientific community, stakeholders, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting laboratory, greenhouse, and field research, and presenting and publishing findings from their research through different outlets.

  • Understanding of Midwestern farming systems, including tools and technology (such as UAS, and farming equipment)

  • Experience in preparing research proposals and mentoring students.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
