The Department of Geology & Geography at West Virginia University invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor of Geology with a specialization in Energy Geochemistry starting August 16, 2024. This is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure position with full benefits. Research Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., to Research Associate Professor and Research Professor; however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability. The successful candidate will contribute to sustainable energy research in IsoBioGeM Lab using a combination of geochemistry and reactive transport modeling approaches in subsurface energy systems.

The successful candidatewill be a key associate of the WVU Institute for Sustainability and Energy Research and have immediate opportunities to collaborate with WVU's long-time partners at the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Lab.

WVU is an R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area. The successful candidate will meet the following criteria.

  • A Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a closely related field like chemical, petroleum, or mineral engineering. ABD candidates will be considered.

  • Capability in conducting lab experiments and geochemical modeling of rock-fluid-gas interactions in subsurface reservoirs targeted for hydrogen storage, carbon storage, or geothermal.

  • Knowledge of geochemical modeling softwares such as GWB, PHREEQC, CrunchFlow, CMG, Tough family code, and programming skills in Python, MATLAB, etc.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • A publication record or demonstrate the ability to publish peer-reviewed research.
