Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Assistant, Per Diem in the Medical Oncology department at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

The Research Assistant, Per Diem will be responsible for the conduct and execution of research experiments following the instructions given by a Principal Investigator in laboratory team. This will include supporting the research of Principal Investigators and senior members of the laboratory. The Research Assistant, Per Diem will be responsible for attending laboratory conferences and for learning appropriate scientific methods and procedures. People with experience in handling mouse and maintaining mouse colonies will be preferred.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Responsible for executing laboratory experiments outlined by the Principal Investigator or a member of the laboratory team.

  • Maintains mouse colonies, including mice breeding, ear tagging and genotyping, and keeps records of mouse colonies.

  • Learns and performs intranasal infection and intratracheal infection techniques to induce lung tumors. Monitors tumor-bearing mouse conditions and monitors lung tumor growth by micro-CT.

  • Performs cell culture, western blot, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence staining.

  • Attends journal clubs and other educational activities as deemed appropriate by lab management team.

  • Assists in design and execution of experiments.

  • Maintains laboratory notebooks.

  • Assists in the preparation and submission of grants and manuscripts.

  • Assists with routine laboratory projects as directed.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree in a relevant science.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to organize assigned laboratory work and develop effective work methods.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory safety policies and perform simple laboratory procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn laboratory database for data entry work.

  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS, BA or higher degree preferred.

  • Biological Science degree preferred.

  • Previous experience in laboratory techniques including molecular biology, cell biology and tissue culture experiments is preferred.

Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lab environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, anti-neoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Special Conditions

  • Must successfully complete all required laboratory safety/shipping courses as required by Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey policy.

  • Occasional overtime is required.
