Roles & Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision, provides support services for research projects.

  • Responsible for setup of lab experiments.

  • Maintains inventory of all research supplies; prepares purchase orders for reagents and supplies.

  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment.

  • Washes and sterilizes glassware

  • May prepare specimens and/or simple solutions.

  • Performs other related duties.

Information regarding NYC civil service exams can be found on the DCAS website below: Position Summary: The Office of Talent Research and Data (ORD) is a team of driven and innovative people who provide research, analytics, and products to diverse stakeholders to support data-driven systems and decision-making in the nation's largest school district. Our portfolio includes educator effectiveness, workforce research, and user-centric product development. Our mission is to increase educational equity in the New York City Department of Education. The Data Scientist position is an opportunity to bring the craft of data science into New York City public education. The Data Scientist position blends statistics, software engineering, and user-centric product development to research, analyze, and ultimately deploy analytics for schools and other users. The Data Scientist also conducts original research and analysis to inform DOE policy. The Data Scientist will work with the team in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. This work will shape the development of important educator-facing tools, such as EduStat (a new initiative to bring more actionable, practice-driven data to stakeholders throughout the education system), as well as identify and realize entirely new analytics and products. The Data Scientist will use a variety of tools to accomplish their work in transparent, reproducible, and sustainable ways. Performs related work. Reports to: Team Director (various teams) Direct Reports: N/A Key Relationships: Works closely with ORD team members as well as with other DT&L staff members, including programmers, data engineers, policy analysts, product designers, policy makers, and web application developers in multiple divisions within the NYCDOE. Responsibilities * Enthusiastically collaborates with others on the team to pursue our mission of educational equity within the NYCDOE. * Collaborates with DOE policymakers and educators to identify central research and analytic priorities, which can include the implementation of organizational procedures, structures, and programs, utilization of data systems and data collection, and performance standards. * Identifies data analytics problems that offer the greatest opportunities for growth and improvement by building diagnostic metrics and models. * Collects and analyzes large sets of structured and unstructured data from various and distinct sources. * Determines metrics and designs models at both Central and school levels to support decision-making in a manner that improves organizational efficiency, promotes data transparency, and facilitates the improvement of educational initiatives. * Utilizes machine learning algorithms and statistics such as regression, simulation, scenario analysis, modeling, etc. to interpret data to feed EduStat reporting and other data products. * Writes code to ingest, cleanse, wrangle, and analyze data to help meet user needs. * Documents work in reproducible and sustainable ways. These include version control, unit testing, and continuous delivery techniques. * Uses data to help UX researchers explore user needs and develop products to meet those needs. * Performs ad hoc analyses. * Collaborates in the design, development, and maintenance of data layers that support web products. * Participates in peer programming and code reviews to improve the office's collective code base. * Creates technical documents and process documentation, and provides program and technical training to analysts and others working on related systems. * Acts as project manager for selected workstreams. * Drafts communications based on updates to relevant policies and new product launches or improvements. * Designs and produces both ad hoc and regular reports to meet a variety of needs from diverse stakeholders which may include other teams within the Division of Teaching and Learning. Qualification Requirements: Minimum * A master's degree from an accredited college in economics, finance, accounting, business or public administration, human resources management, management science, operations research, organizational behavior, industrial psychology, statistics, personnel administration, labor relations, psychology, sociology, human resources development, political science, or a closely related field; or * A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory full-time professional experience for educational program(s) and/or institution(s) in one or a combination of the following areas: working with the budget of a large public or private concern in budget administration, accounting, economic or financial administration, or fiscal or economic research; or in management or methods analysis, operations research, organizational research or program evaluation; or in educational, personnel or public administration, recruitment, position classification, personnel relations, labor relations, employee benefits, staff development, employment program planning/administration, labor market research, economic planning, social services program planning/evaluation, or fiscal management. Plus * Proficient in R, Python, or other scripting language. Preferred * Proficient in Git version control. * Proficient in SQL. * Experience with data visualization or design.
