Casual Research Assistant I position with the UTHealth School of Public Health in Brownsville, TX.

Position Summary:

Under close direction of senior research staff, conducts activities to support research projects.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1.Responsible for preparing and delivering Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) sessions for the participants according to protocol.

2.Encourage community members to participate in the project and maintain contact with program participants.

3.Responsible for accurately collecting and recording data from participants according to protocol.

4.Participate in all measurement sessions, collect, record accurate data, and evaluate and interpret research data to provide needed information to the program manager and other researchers. Updates notebooks, records, and databases as needed.

5.Stay abreast of new and updated protocols for the research department.

6.May be required to assist in and prepare for Nutrition & Mind (Behavior Change) sessions, and/or Exercise sessions, and/or Parent/Caregiver Discussion sessions for the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition… Do it! (MEND) Program.

7.Maintain an open channel of communication with the program manager and coordinator and communicate study participants' questions and/or concerns.

8.Communicate with other organizations' professionals, project field specialists, and project leaders about the program's objectives and progress.

9.Travel to the different class locations in the Rio Grande Valley and being able to work some evenings and weekends are required.



  1. Maintain clean equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

  2. Comply with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes.

  3. Perform other duties as assigned.


Certification/Skills:

General knowledge of research fields.

Preferred:

Bilingual - English and Spanish

General knowledge of research fields.

Background in health promotion, nutrition, exercise science, fitness, or related field

Background in working with adults and children, group-work with adults

Group facilitation skills and experience, especially with youth and families

Ability to motivate and inspire individuals and groups

Strong organizational skills

Ability to be punctual and flexible

Current CPR/First Aid certification

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

No years of experience.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds constantly and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
