Department Overview

The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

Function/Duties of Position

The successful candidate will join an active research team focusing on clinically-relevant strategies for the treatment of premature birth and perinatal brain injury at the Oregon National Primate Research Center of OHSU. This position will support ongoing pre-clinical studies exploring perinatal physiology using macaque models of human disease. The successful candidate will be expected to develop skills relates to working directly with non-human primates and post-mortem collection of samples, in addition to standard laboratory procedures and techniques such as blood and sample processing, tissue histology and flow cytometry, data entry, statistical analysis of data, and reporting of research findings in written and oral formats. The successful candidate will contribute to general lab support duties, including scheduling of experiments, maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment, lab organization and inventories, autoclaving, and disposal of waste. Normal work schedule has some flexibility but is routinely Monday through Friday (9am-5pm).The position includes occasional early mornings, evenings, weekend, holiday or overnight work as required by the scope of the NHP studies.

Key Responsibilities & Performance Standards

Technical Research:

  • Perform a variety of NHP procedures supporting perinatal research including collection of samples, imaging, physiological and research data acquisition and analysis

  • Perform a variety of laboratory procedures, including processing and storage of non-human primate samples, and performance of lab assays, flow cytometry, molecular techniques, immunohistochemistry/ immunofluorescence and other assays

2.Data Analysis/Records/Report Preparation:

  • Data Collection/Data Analysis/Record Keeping: Daily collection of scientific data pertinent to the research projects

  • Must keep accurate records of information and samples obtained during research, analyze results, and produce weekly summaries to outline experimental findings to principal investigator

3.Organize, clean and maintain equipment used in animal studies and lab operations

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's in relevant field OR Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience OR 4 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Previous experience working with mammalian model systems or in reproductive sciences

Additional Details

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Willingness to work directly with animals and samples which may contain pathogens dangerous to humans

  • Able to work flexible hours, including occasional early morning or late evening and weekend hours

  • Will be assigned responsibility for ensuring important work is completed according to schedule

  • Will be expected to attend necropsy procedures

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & EQUIPMENT USAGE:

  • Ability to carry and lift up to 35lbs

  • Ability to stand for 3 continuous hours a day

  • Ability to work on computer for 5 continuous hours a day
