Title: Research and Instruction Librarian / Teaching Faculty

Liasion to: School of Counseling, Psychology & Therapy

Classification: Faculty, Full-Time, Exempt

Reports to: University Librarian

Location: Antioch University New England Campus, Hybrid

Compensation: $66,560.00 - $69,300.00

Position Overview

Reporting to the University Librarian in a 12-month faculty position, Research and Instruction Librarians are assigned as liaisons to Schools at Antioch University. Research and Instruction Librarians will be deeply engaged with the Schools they support and are responsible for cultivating a strong, proactive, collaborative and consultative relationships with faculty through one-one-one research consultations, attending select faculty meetings, and by serving on the Education Curriculum Committee.

Teaching responsibilities will include the development of a student-centered library curriculum that integrates the ALA Framework with the coursework in programs within the school to support students in reaching program learning outcomes and fostering life-long learning skills. Research and Instruction Librarians work with their colleagues to ensure equitable Library Instruction and Support of students across Antioch University and within the Schools they support. Research and Instruction Librarians collaborate with colleagues, co-create instructional materials, and fill in for their library colleagues, when needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ENGAGEMENT IN STUDENT LEARNING (60% of Core Faculty work)

Direct Student Instruction:

Personalized Research Consultations: Provide one-on-one instruction and guidance to students, supporting their learning of the research process, including identifying relevant resources and developing effective search strategies. Individual consultations may be initiated by the student, required by an instructor, or suggested by a library team member.

Workshops / Seminars / Presentations/Co-Teaching: Design and deliver Instructional sessions that cater to the unique needs of students in the assigned School.

Topics covered may include literature reviews, advanced database searching, citation management, and research methodologies, and more. Such offerings are a necessary part of curriculum development and may be offered in tandem with courses or in partnership with Program Faculty, Staff, or Administrators. Asynchronous tutorials may also be developed as part of these offerings.

Library Faculty may work with Program Staff and Administrators to offer workshops, seminars, presentations, and co-teaching opportunities at residencies. Library faculty may also be invited to present at a program's orientation for new students.

Course-Integrated Instruction: Collaborate with Program Faculty to integrate information literacy instruction into courses, ensuring that students acquire research and critical thinking skills relevant to their academic programs and future professions.

Responding to Ask The Library Questions or Email Queries: Students often reach out to the general AU Library help desk with questions that are answered by librarians or students will email Library Faculty directly with research questions. Replies may include custom videos, links to existing library resources or a narrative explanation that guides students through a barrier they've encountered.

Library faculty may be asked to support other programs, as appropriate.

Indirect Student Instruction

Dissertation advisement/instruction pre-publication: Includes review of manuscript for privacy, third party content, accessibility.

Engagement in Service of Student Learning

Library Curriculum Development: In collaboration with departments, develop and implement a student-centered curriculum tailored to the learning and professional needs of students in the assigned School(s). This curriculum will include instructional materials that use online tutorials, research guides, all manner of direct instruction and instructional modules to support student learning. Library Faculty will communicate and consult with other Library Faculty Liaison Librarians develop a set of learning outcomes for all students in degree granting programs at AU to ensure equitable library instruction and support The manner in which these learning outcomes are achieved may vary depending on program degree level, subject areas, and program modality and is the work of the Library Faculty member.

Program Support: Including attendance at Departmental and School Faculty meetings, as needed and Program or School curriculum committee meetings as needed.

Represent Program needs in AU Library discussions of teaching and resource needs. Attend dissertation defenses and other final project presentations in the assigned School(s). Use Program Faculty meetings as opportunities to learn more about and identify likely points of library instruction and learning support.

Collection Development: Ensuring that the library's collection aligns with the research and learning needs of the Schools by adding new and relevant monographs in response to program and professional trends. This may include requests to expand the AU Library holdings of digital resources including academic journals and databases.

Advise and Collaborate with Faculty: Collaborate with Program Faculty who are developing new courses or revising syllabi, paying particular attention to assignment creation/revision, identifying assigned readings (especially in programs committed to minimizing student textbooks costs), support instructors in implementing best practices for linking to library resources, teach and inform Faculty of their responsibilities re. Fair Use and course readings.

Library Outreach: Engage in outreach activities to promote library resources and services and learning opportunities to students in the assigned School(s). Additionally, create outreach efforts for Program Faculty, Staff to share information about relevant tools and services that support both Faculty and student use of Library tools and resources. Communicating with departments to receive names of new Faculty members to assist with a Library Onboarding for new Faculty

Institutional Citizenship, Scholarship, Service, Research

Professional Development and Service: Stay current with developments in library science and academic trends, participating in relevant conferences and workshops. Serve on relevant professional committees and teams.

AU Committee Participation: Required attendance at Antioch University Library Departmental and Faculty meetings. As assigned, represent the AU Library and AU Library Faculty on Antioch University committees where a Library voice and perspective is important to future programming, student learning, or Faculty voice and governance.

Campus based library services: As assigned.

Work in a campus library may include developing local programming in collaboration with Liaison Librarians from across the university and AU Library Staff. Offering in-person appointments. Potentially assisting in hiring of library FWS students.

Research: Encouraged and supported.

Archival work: As assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • ALA accredited Masters in Library Science (MLS) and a subject Masters are required; MLS with PhD or EdD strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of five years providing library services to graduate students, master's and doctoral level, including development of a library curriculum based on the ACRL Framework.

  • Demonstrated proficiency providing distance library instruction.

  • Demonstrated success in outreach, communication, and relationship building in distance education

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in building an information literacy curriculum based on the ACRL Framework.

  • Ability to collaborate with library colleagues

  • Strong self-management skills

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in library services and student instruction.

  • Knowledge of current trends in higher education and scholarly communication.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in a range of platforms, tools and technologies and fluency with virtual instruction tools

  • Must be able to travel.

  • Comfort and significant experience with being part of a geographically dispersed learning community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An additional advanced degree in a relevant academic field. Doctoral degree preferred.

  • Familiarity with video production software, LibGuides, Canva

  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and instructional technology.

  • Publications or contributions to the field of library and information science

Hours of Employment

This is a full-time, exempt, Faculty position serving a national university which operates in multiple time zones. A work schedule will be established in consultation with the supervisor

Work Location

Antioch University New England Campus, with an option for hybrid work - must be able to work on-site at AUNE campus when classes are in session.
