Description

The R&D Scientist will be involved in development, optimization and validation of veterinary molecular diagnostic tests. A highly-motivated candidate will have ownership of R&D projects with unique challenges and rewards in a cooperative and innovative company culture.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in technical support and leadership roles to develop and validate molecular diagnostic assays and associated production processes for manufacture

  • Design, optimize and verify primer probes, reagent formulations and controls to meet product specifications

  • Design and optimize sample preparation reagents and procedures for DNA/RNA extraction

  • Apply scientific knowledge to the design and independent execution of experiments

  • Collect and analyze data, provide interpretation and conclusions

  • Collaborate with research and production teams and external research partners

  • Present experimental results and contribute to team discussions

  • Write protocols and technical documents for regulatory submission and marketing materials

  • Manufacturing process development and validation for transfer from R&D to manufacturing

  • Data organization and presentation of study results internally and at meetings outside of VMRD

  • Provision of expert technical support, problem solving and scientific consultation to the customers and various teams within VMRD

  • Keep up to date with the latest technological advancements in the field

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related field with minimum 2 years of experience

  • Solid understanding of molecular assay design and optimization

  • Excellent organizational and scientific skills, outstanding attention to details, ability to work well within a team, strong communication skills

  • Ability to lead and balance priorities to meet timelines.

  • Demonstrated competence in experimental design, problem solving, analytics, leadership, coaching, project management and collaboration

Desirable Qualifications

  • PhD in a related field

  • Proficient in bioinformatics and statistics

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in molecular diagnostic assay development including PCR and qPCR; preferably in design and optimization of multiplex PCR assays

  • Previous experience in development of diagnostic assays in a regulated (USDA, FDA, etc.) environment

Responsibilities * ELISA kit production (plate coating, optimization) * Cell culture, virus culture, bacterial culture, culture of microorganisms * Protein purification: Salt precipitation, ion exchange chromatography, size restriction, affinity matrix * Protein evaluation: BCA quantitation, spectrophotometric analysis * Protein conjugation: HRP, FITC * Making buffers, sterile filtration, making dilutions, making pools, making aliquots * Running and interpreting assays: IFA, AGID, ELISA, RID * In-process quality control and monitoring * Packaging and labeling product * Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of work performed * Calibrating, operating and maintaining equipment * Developing and updating SOPs as needed * Analyzing and interpreting data * Troubleshooting and identifying areas for process improvement * Adhering to internal policies and regulatory guidelines * Mentoring Production Assistants and Production Scientists * Working with R&D to transfer new technology * Other duties as assigned Required Skills * Excellent understanding of scientific principles * Ability to analyze and interpret data * Excellent observation skills and the ability to pay attention to details * Desire to function as part of a team (listening, collaborating and contributing) * Respectful to coworkers, superiors, customers and vendors * Excellent multi-tasking and prioritization skills * Excellent communication skills both oral and written * Good information technology skills (MS Office and pertinent laboratory software) * Ability to work in a time-sensitive environment Desired Qualifications * BS in biological science field; advanced degree preferred Physical Requirements * Ability to lift 50 pounds VMRD (Veterinary Medical Research and Development) researches, develops and manufactures veterinary diagnostic test kits and related reagents for distribution in nearly eighty countries.
