Job Overview

The Research and Development Engineer is responsible for providing engineering knowledge, skill, and ability to handle such tasks as: project management, engineering design, prototyping development, gathering of pertinent background information, and leading project and design teams from conception through commercial launch of medical devices. Additionally, the Research and Development Engineer will be responsible for managing project costs, issuing quotes to customers, procuring material quotes, interacting with customers while ensuring full compliance to FDA QSR (21 CFR 820), and applicable ISO 13485 requirements.

Responsibilities & Qualifications


  • Will be responsible for establishing product requirements, concept prototyping, design and development (including verification and validation), risk/failure mode assessment, performance and safety testing.

  • Coordinate time and activities of others and/or serve as a project leader for cross-functional programs.

  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.

  • Reviews or coordinates outside vendor activities to support development.

  • Manages or develops technical solutions to design problems with vendors and in-house resources through design reviews, design audits, and prototype analysis.

  • Interface with customers and internal departments articulating team activities and progress.

  • Work closely with manufacturing engineering to improve process, procedure, and cost.

  • May directly supervise one or more technicians or assemblers.


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Bachelor's Degree plus a minimum of four (4) years' experience in a related regulated medical device environment. Or a Master's Degree with 0-2 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization, educations and experience.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to apply common sense, understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

The customer support shall be at various phases of usage of ANSYS products right from problem definition, setup, solution, visualization and results interpretation. It shall involve contribution to Best practices for Post-Sales support including Knowledge resources development. This role shall involve leading second line support for Reacting Flows. This person shall be interacting directly with customers to understand and guide the usage of Simulation in their Product Development Process and uncover opportunities for customer simulation adoption enhancement through training, best practices. This person shall be assisting Product development team with application feature testing. This role shall also contribute to Customer Training and Consulting Services and shall assist Sales and Presales team to grow ANSYS business based on the skill set and expertise. RESPONSIBILITIES * Assist clients using ANSYS Fluids and Reaction Design products in all phases of analysis from correct posing of the initial problem, solution and interpretation of results. * Interact with customers to help diagnose issues, as well as research and find solutions to a wide variety of large scope, complex problems, in order to improve customers' productivity and satisfaction with ANSYS products * Guide customers in the proper usage of ANSYS products, in order to improve their productivity and satisfaction with ANSYS simulation products * Work collaboratively with customers to ensure their successful use of ANSYS products, sustain a renewals revenue stream * Seed opportunities to expand software usage or discuss advanced technology during customer interaction * Developing simulation best practices, solutions, FAQs for knowledge base * Develop and strengthen long-term relationships with customers. * Instruct training classes on the usage of ANSYS simulation products * Assist product development team with application feature testing. Collaborate with product development to improve ANSYS products and the customers' experience using these products * Execute field marketing activities including technical presentations for marketing events, assist Sales and Presales efforts to grow ANSYS business based on the expertise and skill set requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Ph.D., Masters or Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline (Mechanical / Chemical) * A minimum 3 years of experience in an engineering software environment * A minimum of 4 years of experience in use of relevant ANSYS software or other commercial software (can be obtained or partially obtained in a university setting) * Sound Knowledge of Fluids Mechanics, heat transfer and Reacting Flows (Combustion) * Engaging personality, engineering curiosity and willingness for continuous learning * Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to implement numerical models to obtain practical engineering solutions to difficult problems * Ability to work independently, as well as with others in a diverse team environment * Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and to communicate effectively with customers * Demonstrated skills in writing and presenting in fluent English * Strong ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments. * Interested in working with customers and willing to travel PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Knowledge of other commercial CFD software packages preferred * Must have passion and drive for personal technical excellence and high performance * Must have customer service aptitude and maintain custom CULTURE AND VALUES Culture and values are incredibly important to ANSYS.
