Job Overview

The Research and Development Engineer is responsible for providing engineering knowledge, skill, and ability to handle such tasks as: project management, engineering design, prototyping development, gathering of pertinent background information, and leading project and design teams from conception through commercial launch of medical devices. Additionally, the Research and Development Engineer will be responsible for managing project costs, issuing quotes to customers, procuring material quotes, interacting with customers while ensuring full compliance to FDA QSR (21 CFR 820), and applicable ISO 13485 requirements.

Responsibilities & Qualifications


  • Will be responsible for establishing product requirements, concept prototyping, design and development (including verification and validation), risk/failure mode assessment, performance and safety testing.

  • Coordinate time and activities of others and/or serve as a project leader for cross-functional programs.

  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.

  • Reviews or coordinates outside vendor activities to support development.

  • Manages or develops technical solutions to design problems with vendors and in-house resources through design reviews, design audits, and prototype analysis.

  • Interface with customers and internal departments articulating team activities and progress.

  • Work closely with manufacturing engineering to improve process, procedure, and cost.

  • May directly supervise one or more technicians or assemblers.


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Bachelor's Degree plus a minimum of four (4) years' experience in a related regulated medical device environment. Or a Master's Degree with 0-2 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization, educations and experience.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to apply common sense, understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities Summary: Mortenson is currently seeking a Design Engineer II in Minneapolis, MN. The Design Engineer is responsible for detailed design for high voltage substation and transmission projects through 500 kV. They will be responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements. * Responsible for the relay protection & control engineering aspects on substation and transmission design projects * Works independently with limited direction from Engineering Lead * Comfortable interfacing and presenting to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision makers, project teams, etc.) * Acts as lead technical designer on 2 - 4 large design projects annually across 69Kv and above scopes * Review and approve equipment vendor drawings and sign off on testing report on major equipment from manufacturers * Provide engineering support for proposals, estimating, procurement and construction * Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects * Mentor, coach and develop junior team members * Assist field personnel in resolving unanticipated site conditions * Strong project management and analytical problem solving skills * Strong understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies Qualifications Qualifications: * Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE preferred) or related Engineering program required * 4+ years related work experience * Proficient in engineering theories and principles * Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations * Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or achievement of EIT within 6 months of entering position required * Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred Mortenson is an EOE/Affirmative Action/M/F/Veteran/Disabled employer. #LI-NC1 Mortenson Minneapolis MN
