Position Summary

The Research Analyst position is key to the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual and Washington University's Digital Intelligence & Innovation Accelerator (DI2). The Research Analyst will play a critical role in helping to develop research and business practices to launch and support program activities through the effective use of storytelling and technical writing across a range of emerging technology and design opportunities. The Research Analyst will also enhance research capabilities by collaborating with faculty, administrators, students, and partners to analyze research requirements and select the appropriate technical tools. They are responsible for working with faculty, administrators, students and partners to develop stories, business practices, and communication materials that build awareness, inspire engagement and philanthropy, attract talented students and faculty, and position our programs regionally, nationally, and globally.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis is a unique collaboration in architecture, art, and design education within the context of an internationally recognized research university. Comprised of the College of Art, the College of Architecture, and the Kemper Art Museum, the Sam Fox School offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees in conjunction with a premier university art museum. The Digital Intelligence & Innovation Accelerator (DI2) is leading implementation of the Digital Transformation pillar of Washington University's strategic plan, Here & Next. The DI2 Accelerator will expand and support work in the digital domain to grow research excellence, enhance and strengthen educational experience for our students; and enable operational growth.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Research Development & Applied Learning

  • Supports faculty and administrators in developing high-priority cross-disciplinary research applications for federal and private funders. This includes proposal management services, scientific editing, graphical editing, and facilitating communication across disciplines/project areas and being a liaison between research teams, administrative units, advancement, and other university offices.

  • Works with administrators and faculty in the pursuit of strategic partnerships and resources to complement technology-focused core service units, degree programs and co-curricular events. This includes helping to draft white papers, case studies, and materials to grow and build out opportunities to advance curricular impact and physical space capacities.

  • Liaisons with administrators, central offices, partners, and key stakeholders to help identify priorities, respond to emerging opportunities, and build long-term support cases for engagement and support. This includes helping to set annual goals, determine metrics for success, and track/identify data sources.

Business Development & Analysis

  • Liaisons with faculty, technical support staff, and other campus partners to define program and/or project requirements. Conducts stakeholder surveys, operational reviews, and post-implementation surveys to measure progress and performance. Documents methodologies and results to translate learnings for efficiencies and increased impact.

  • Works with faculty, administrators, and partners to understand and document strategic goals and opportunities to advance digital transformation projects. Responsible for collecting, analyzing, and documenting business requirements and opportunities. Conducts research to identify potential solutions and process improvements as needed.

  • Works with project staff and administrators to develop case studies and strategic communications that help increase awareness and engagement with digital transformation services.

Technical Writing, Storytelling, and Research Communications

  • Writes and edits content that translates research and technical information into applied knowledge for global audiences and organizations of all sizes.

  • Works with faculty and administrators to understand and translate their work as subject matter experts through intense collaboration.

  • Works with faculty, partners, administrators, and students to develop stories that increase the brand value, reach, and impact of program activities to drive student and faculty recruitment, audience engagement, and awareness.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education experience.

  • Significant experience in journalism, research communications, or research-focused media relations.

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for and experience in a field related to technology, creative practice, and design.

  • Prior experience in designing and managing projects.

  • Ability to meaningfully engage stakeholders and build relationships.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively and to contribute to creative projects.

  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills and effective organizational and analytical skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of writing and editing best practices and use of style guides.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments with various levels of priority.

  • Skilled at making complex, dense research material accessible to a general audience.

  • Prior experience supporting faculty and teams in successful pursuit of research funding from private and/or federal sources

  • Open collaborative style that promotes partnerships and the ability to build strong relationships across constituents.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Organized and flexible with the ability to prioritize and work under time constraints and meet project deadlines.

  • Creative thinker with innovative spirit.

  • Ability to look for new and better ways to develop content/perform tasks.

  • Executes work with a high level of diplomacy, demonstrating calm under pressure and fantastic interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and other standard office programs. Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Five years of experience developing or writing proposals to or for federal, state, or private agencies or five years of experience writing scientific research proposals, articles and technical reports for similar audiences, or an equivalent combination of experience.

Salary Range

$58,400.00 - $99,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
