Job Summary

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute is an interdisciplinary institution dedicated to conducting basic, clinical and translational research on conditions and diseases that affect children, and is part of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania research community.

A Postdoctoral position in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology/ Gene Therapy is available in the laboratory of Peter Kurre, M.D., at the Comprehensive Center for Bone Marrow Failure. The Laboratory has longstanding expertise in hematopoietic stem cell biology and preclinical Gene Therapy Studies with emphasis on Fanconi Anemia (FA), a paradigmatic bone marrow failure disorder. The principal research project for the position involves studies of clonal succession and diversity after HSC Gene Therapy and will bring a number of innovative models to bear. Investigations will involve a wide range of methods in stem cell and molecular biology, imaging and bioinformatics. For this project our group collaborates closely with Dr. Stefano Rivella, an expert in lentivector gene therapy treatment for hemoglobinopathies.

Post-doctoral trainees will participate in project planning, recording and interpretation/evaluation of data, and communication of results. The candidate will acquire critical technical and lab management skills to further their career, and become proficient at manuscript/grant writing. The successful candidate will participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentations at national meetings. Postdoctoral fellows also will participate in teaching and supervision of junior lab members, develop new methods and protocols for research, and have an opportunity to develop new research projects in the lab.

Studies in the Young laboratory encompass a spectrum of basic and patient-oriented research in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) and rare lung diseases and lung biology. Genetic mouse models and in vitro systems are utilized to understand the cell biology and mechanisms of ILD pathogenesis. Longitudinal research cohorts of patients with rare lung diseases provide biospecimens for genetic discovery and translational studies, with a goal of applying that knowledge towards the development of therapies. In close collaboration with Dr. Young, the post-doctoral fellow will investigate the cell biology of genetic and developmental lung diseases, focusing on epithelial and fibroblast biology. The postdoctoral fellow will play a vital role in the day to day operations of the laboratory and be expected to make primary contributions to preparation of manuscripts and grants. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as Biochemistry, Cellular and/or Molecular Biology, Physiology or Pharmacology and a strong background in techniques relevant to these fields.
