Our full-time legal editor position offers a unique opportunity for a lawyer with natural writing and editing ability who is interested in a nontraditional career in law and work-life balance. We are based in Berkeley, California but are open to remote candidates prepared to travel to our office from time to time.

Responsibilities

The Estate Planning Legal Editor will:

  • Write and edit articles for Nolo's websites.

  • Update books and articles.

  • Update and develop estate planning forms and software, including Quicken WillMaker.

  • Train and work with freelance writers, and

  • Ensure the legal accuracy of content.

Requirements

The Estate Planning Legal Editor must:

  • Show excellent writing and editing skills for a nonlegal audience (blogging or journalism experience is a plus).

  • Have a law degree from an ABA-accredited law school and no professional disciplinary history.

  • Have experience as a practicing estate planning attorney or the ability and willingness to develop sophisticated understanding of this area of law.

  • Work well with others.

  • Be able to manage several projects at once, and

  • Be comfortable with Microsoft Office suite and Windows operating systems.

Substantive editing and copy editing Provide substantive editing and copy editing of grants, manuscripts, and other documents according to Scientific Publications, Research Medical Library, standards. Address errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, word choice, syntax, etc., and improve clarity, organization, consistency, and readability. Education and writing consultations Participate in the development and delivery of scientific writing classes, presentations, and webinars; provide writing and publishing advice and one-on-one consultations to authors to improve their knowledge of writing standards and the editorial process. Participate in outreach events and professional development activities for the department. Project participation and teamwork Assist with the publication of books, newsletters, and/or journals, including identifying copyright problems and obtaining necessary permissions to reprint material (if appropriate). Participate in project meetings, set up and maintain databases, and create reports. Progress through Professional Development Model within the expected time frame and meet department standards.
