Our location in Columbus, OH currently has an opportunity for a Reliability Engineer. This site is Abbott's oldest nutrition manufacturing plant in the world. Working here, you'll feel part of a family - a family of 400 that works together to help nourish the world.

What you'll do as a Reliability Engineer:

Apply scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to complete assignments related to maintenance excellence and reliability.

Engage in the overall lifecycle of capital assets (designing, delivering, operating, maintaining, and decommissioning) in the most productive and cost effective manner.

Manage the preventive and predictive maintenance programs, coordinate plant shutdown assignments, provide capital project input and support while maintaining a zero incident safety mindset, teamwork attitude and excellent customer service.

Technical/Design: Independently gathers maintenance and manufacturing performance data (Maximo, Zarpac, etc.), and performs preliminary analysis.

  • Reports findings. Anticipates future directions.

  • Prepares and communicates recommendations and respective action plans to drive cost containment and cost reduction efforts.

  • Benchmarks internally and externally.

  • Assists with deployment of predictive and reliability centered maintenance strategies

Problem Solving: Provide a centralized, strategic look across equipment performance (downtime), material/component failure analysis, and changeovers.

  • Predicts patterns/trends.

  • Grasps complexities and sees relationships among data, determines consequences and alternatives; makes recommendations, analyzes problems from multiple perspectives. Improves maintenance processes.

  • Recognizes and implements process improvements and cost reductions; creatively applies others' ideas.

  • Facilitates root cause analysis for equipment downtime.

  • Develops and executes reliability studies and evaluations of equipment robustness

Compliance: Complies with all regulations and standards for quality, Environmental, Health, Safety, and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards, and other governance areas as applicable.

  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of assigned tasks.

  • Has awareness of the potential consequences of changes to established processes.

  • Identifies areas of risk with respect to compliance.

  • Additional Responsibilities May Include: Develops procedures and standards.

  • Directs the efforts of others such as technicians and outside resources.

  • Provides training.

  • Supervising the resources for Preventive/Predictive Maintenance.

  • Customer interface (in support of uptime and meeting production plan) and/or daily performance review meetings.

  • Leads capital plant projects or process improvement initiatives (i.e.

  • OpEx).

  • Plan, implement, and perform effectiveness checks for corrective actions on exception reports.

  • If needed, provide maintenance supervisory coverage.

Required:

  • High School Diploma and 5+ years technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with significant engineering and/or operational experience.

  • The skill set of this position requires a balance of industrial and mechanical engineering principles, data analysis, process improvement techniques, and problem-solving.

  • Possesses a working technical knowledge of maintenance programs.

  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Familiarity with "reliability centered maintenance' is preferred.

  • Candidate must successfully demonstrate/possess a strong work ethic, safety-conscious philosophy (i.e. zero incident mindset), strong customer service attitude, excellent communication skills, initiative, strong technical knowledge, planning and organizing, teamwork, attention to detail, strong problem solving skills and prior knowledge of computer systems (i.e. Windows desktop software).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Interacts well with diverse groups within engineering and maintenance, and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external collaborators.

  • Listens to and understands others' points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one's own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.

  • Works well with others in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment. Possesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.

Preferred Education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, science or closely related discipline OR Mechanical degree or related experience is preferred.

  • 5 +yrs leadership experience or equivalent.

  • Previous experience as a mechanic, electrician or instrument tech beneficial.

  • Extensive experience in leading/managing projects or process improvement initiatives; Previous Lean Six Sigma training beneficial.

  • Extensive experience in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.

  • Strong, proven leadership experience required with an emphasis on supervision of direct reports and influence senior leadership.

  • Previous experience in generating and managing financial budgets. Ability to manage a department in the absence of the department manager.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The goal for the Electrician within the Maintenance Department is to maintain plant electrical/mechanical systems and equipment in a safe and reliable manner. This work must comply with all applicable corporate, state and federal regulation/policies. The Maintenance Department's function is to provide outstanding customer service and support to the manufacturing teams through preventative/predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and upgrading of plant processing, packaging, and the filling line equipment. Required Electrician Major Responsibilities: Tactical functions: * Proficient in performing repairs and troubleshooting high speed equipment and plant utility systems; make machine adjustments to case packers, palletizers, sleevers, labelers, and other equipment for proper operation. * Troubleshoot and repair/replace variable frequency drives (VFDs), vision systems and barcode scanners, video-jet ink printers, computer control systems. * Install various components including: seals, bushings, couplings, bearings, O-rings, gaskets, adhesives, belts, chains, rollers, sprockets, gears and sheaves, cylinders, etc. * Wire and repair/replace electric motors; repair basic wiring, install/replace correct size fuses, troubleshoot motor overload protection and contactors * Use electrical tools such as Multi-meter and Megger * Responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting problems with AC drive systems and PLCs. Be able to access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop computer or desktop station. Properly maintaining a PLC requires the understanding of the wiring schematics. Strategic functions: * Perform Preventative Maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation * Develop a replacement part lists and follow-up work orders based on findings from inspections and repairs that are performed * Perform lubrication tasks, gather oil samples (if required), add oil or grease, monitor self-lubrication systems, pm automatic lubrication systems, apply grease and oil to components, drain and fill as needed. * Ability to use CMMS work order system and follow all stockroom procedures. * Work with operations to help improve operator care initiatives with your experience and findings from inspections and repairs Skills / experience with: * Knowledge of Allen Bradley hardware including but not limited to VFD's and PLC's. * Ability to make emergency repairs with welding and fabricating brackets. * Use guidelines within National Electric Code (NEC); read electrical schematics and wire directly from wiring diagrams; * Responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting problems with AC drive systems and PLCs. Be able to access and interpret PLC logic via a laptop computer or desktop station. Properly maintaining a PLC requires the understanding of the wiring schematics. * Accountable for maintaining various hand tools and equipment; drills, wrenches, micrometers, calipers, torches, welders, lathe, mill, multimeter, grinders, bandsaw, etc. Policies/procedures: * Follow all plant and department procedures, GMP's and plant safety rules. Keep all work areas clean by following 5S protocol. * Follow all maintenance safety procedures; LOTO, know how to recognize an unsafe situation and evaluate the situation to keep yourself and others safe while performing the needed repair. * Housekeeping of the shop is primarily the responsibility of everyone working in the area. * Able to apply applicable regulatory standards and requirements for infant formula and nutritionals. * This position is accountable for ensuring compliance with applicable FDA (GMP), USDA, OSHA and Abbott regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines. Education requirements: High School Diploma or GED and two years mechanical/electrical technical degree or equivalent experience.
