Responsible for the accurate cession processing, accounting, administration, and regulatory reporting of Markel's ceded reinsurance portfolio. This position reports to the Manager, Supervisor, or Director of Reinsurance Accounting.
Participate in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of monthly and quarterly accounting functions including cession analysis, manual reinsurance calculations, and intermediary and reinsurer reporting
Prepare adjusting journal entries and perform monthly general ledger closings and reporting deliverables
Perform account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with SOX control requirements
Research and interpret reinsurance treaty contract language pertaining to accounting contractual requirements
Adhere to all SOX controls and maintain and follow all department processes and procedures.
Assist with internal and external audit review as needed
Assist with systems integration and testing as needed
Work closely with other functional areas (i.e. Reinsurance Placement, Actuarial, Underwriting, Claims, and Operational Accounting & Reporting) to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals
Collaborate with teammates to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
Assist with ad-hoc requests and other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise
1-3 years of accounting experience
Experience in reinsurance accounting a plus
Experience with Oracle and Cognos a plus
Ability to work in a team environment
Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel
Research, analytical and problem solving skills
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong desire for continuous improvement
