The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The Pool Supervisor/Lifeguard performs moderately complex habilitation/rehabilitation work planning, scheduling, coordinating, implementing and supervising water-related events and activities at the SSLC. Serves as Lifeguard, ensuring safety of all individuals and staff, in the aquatics programs on and off the SSLC facility.

Provides Texas Special Olympics training and coaching for individuals for aquatic sports and activities. Ensures the Natatorium/pool is in compliance with Life Safety Standards. Maintains equipment and supplies in good working condition.

Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of treatment plans for aquatic therapy. Assist in supervising the pool staff and conducting training to recreation and other staff as needed. Participates in the interdisciplinary team process by gathering and reporting data on treatment plans for individuals.

Ensures the satisfactory completion of paperwork in program related areas in order to meet applicable standards and procedures. Develops, maintains and submits required reports in a timely manner. Valid driver's license and ability to drive a state vehicle may be required in order to as a backup driver when needed. Works under the general supervision of a Registered Therapist, Recreational Supervisor or Vocational Rehabilitation Supervisor with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

This position is required to drive a state-owned vehicle.

Essential Job Functions:

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Plans, schedules, coordinates, participates in and supervises water related events and activities on and or off the SSLC campus. Plans aquatic and other recreational activities that are enjoyed by persons with a variety of skills, abilities and interests.

Ensures that up to date monthly pool calendars, schedules and event flyers are posted on the units and in common areas on campus. Completes required paperwork for off-campus trips.

Assists recreation and unit/home staff in conducting scheduled pool / splash pad activities, provides equipment and materials necessary to conduct evening and weekend water activities and serves as Lifeguard, ensuring safety of all individuals and staff, in aquatics programs on and off the SSLC facility.

Provides Texas Special Olympics training and coaching for individuals for aquatic sports and activities.

Ensures the Natatorium/pool is in compliance with Life Safety Standards. Assists in maintaining the natatorium/pool, developing work orders for needed repairs and contacting contractors for pool maintenance.

Monitors and maintains pool supplies and ensures pool supplies are available and replaced when needed. Ensures all equipment is stored and used properly.

Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of treatment plans for aquatic therapy. Conducts, or assists the assigned therapist or programming supervisor in conducting, pool assessment and functional skills assessments (e.g., preparing materials for assessments, reviewing prior assessments, conducting direct contact observations). Provides instruction/training regarding treatment plans for aquatics to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, many of whom have complex needs.

Directly implements treatment plans through "hands on" methods. Monitors treatment goals and objectives through direct contact observation.

Assist in supervising the pool staff and conducting training to recreation and other staff as needed. Schedules, assists with and/or provides staff training to Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to ensure continuity and follow through of treatment plan objectives during hours when Therapists or Therapist Technicians are not available and depending on SSLC needs.

Participates in the interdisciplinary team process including providing information regarding the results of assessments and response to interventions as well as the results of monitoring and staff training efforts as assigned. Monitors the implementation of the program objectives by the DSPs, gathers data and reports this to the IDT as well as the Therapist or Supervisor overseeing the aquatics program.

Ensures the satisfactory completion of paperwork in program related areas in order to meet applicable standards and procedures. Develops, maintains and submits required reports in a timely manner.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

Knowledge of water hazards, lifesaving techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and other rescue methods; and basic facility cleaning and sanitation techniques.

Knowledge and skills in aquatics programs and/or activities.

General knowledge of ICF regulations and state supported living center policies and procedures.

Skill in basic swimming techniques, in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques, and in lifesaving procedures.

Ability to provide guidance and instruction to others.

Ability to train staff in treatment methods and related areas.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Ability to work in emergency situations.

Ability to assist in development of treatment and support plans.

Ability to develop and maintain data collection systems.

Ability to utilize personal computers and relevant software.

General knowledge, or ability to gain knowledge, of ICF/IID regulations and state supported living center policies and procedures.

Ability to meet the same physical requirements as those for direct contact staff positions.

Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Requires current Lifesaving, Lifeguard, and/or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.

Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date, is required or preferred. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy

Initial Selection Criteria:

At least six months of work experience with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities or in performing therapeutic work.

High school diploma or GED is preferred.

Experience as a Lifeguard is preferred.

Experience in the development of treatment and support plans for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is preferred.
