Job Summary / Job Purpose
The cancer registrar works in collaboration with physicians, administrators, the cancer team and other departments, promotes quality outcome management by ensuring that timely, accurate and complete data is incorporated and maintained on all cancer types and required benign conditions diagnosed and/or treated within a Kentucky One Health facility. The cancer registrar serves as a resource to the Oncology Service Line for cancer referrals and monitoring adverse outcomes.
The cancer registrar is involved in managing and analyzing clinical cancer information for the purposes of education, research and outcomes measurement; preparing statistical reports, narrative reports and graphic presentations of cancer registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers and administrators. The cancer registrar follows data collection, reporting and quality standards for compliance to state, federal and third party accreditation and regulatory agencies.
The cancer registrar is responsible for accurately abstracting and coding cancer data for Kentucky One Health, accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) as a Commission on Cancer (CoC) quality driven program. This position supports the goal of a complete and accurate Cancer Registry to meet standards required to achieve ACOS-CoC accreditation, cancer program management and to comply with government regulations.
A cancer registrar abstracts data from the medical record and assigns diagnosis codes based on the type of cancer and records the information within a database. A cancer registry is the quality outcomes department for the oncology service line.
Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):
Associates of Applied Science (AAS) or equivalent education.
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the national Cancer Registrars Association is required and must be continually maintained in good standing.
Experience (required and preferred):
CTR in good standing with two years experience in a cancer registry
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.
Knowledge of Cancer Registry software systems.
Ability to use office equipment and automated systems/applications/software at a proficient level and speed preferred.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools preferred.
