Summary: The Registered School Nurse performs a critical role by addressing the major health problems experienced by children. This role includes providing preventive and screening services, health education and assistance with decision-making about health, and immunization against preventable diseases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Coordination of Care:

  • Assists the assigned school(s) in understanding and managing health issues for students, including but not limited to the implementation of physician (or other prescribing provider) orders, following applicable laws and procedures.

  • Consult with school staff, trained school support staff, parents/guardians, and students regarding identified student health issues/concerns.

  • Responsible for completing initial health assessments, for initiating/revising plans of care (for students with prescribed daily health care needs in the school setting), and for initiating emergency care plans (for students with a reported chronic and/or acute health condition).

  • Serves as a consultant to school staff, trained unlicensed personnel, and/or parents/guardians. Works collaboratively with the school health team to ensure that school staff and paraprofessionals are appropriately educated and trained to follow approved school health protocol(s); including the supervision of student medication administration, as appropriate.

  • Acts as a liaison between assigned school(s), health department(s), health care provider(s), and other health agencies to coordinate care for students.

  • Provides education and training to school staff (including paraprofessionals) and to district LPNs, as appropriate, to support these individuals in performing prescribed health procedures in the school setting; provides professional development opportunities on student health-related subjects/conditions.

  • Provides nursing care for ill or injured students, and appropriately refers students for health issues requiring a higher level of care. Ensures follow-up as appropriate.

  • Provides health counseling to students, parents/guardians, and/or staff, as appropriate.

  • Assists schools with immunization requirements and health screenings for students; including mass vision screening, mass hearing screening, and any other mandated screenings, as required.

  • Works in collaboration with the school principal(s) and school nursing support staff to meet the daily health care needs of all students.

Collaboration and Partnership

  • Orient new district nursing employees and serves as a mentor and supervisor to these staff members.

  • Communicate with parent(s)/guardian(s), school staff and faculty as necessary concerning the student's health status; while maintaining confidentiality.

  • Attend staff meetings and participate in professional development opportunities.

Quality

  • Meet assignment, attendance and punctuality standards.

  • Documentation of student visits, education, and training according to policy.

  • Documentation of weekly supervisory visits with school LPNs, and all trained unlicensed school personnel according to policy.

  • Responsible for maintaining Continuing Education according to LSBN guidelines.

Essential Functions/Qualifications/Requirements:

Education and Experience:

Holds a current license as a registered nurse in the state of Louisiana. Minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse preferred. School Nurses Certification-Louisiana Department of Education.
