General Summary Provides respiratory care relating to evaluation, treatment, teaching and support for a complex and varied group of Patients. Principal Duties and Responsibilities includes, but not limited to: 1.

Responds to cardiac and respiratory arrest according to Hospital policy. 2. Enters, maintains, and retrieves department computer information. 3. Answers questions and concerns regarding respiratory care issues from patients and families. 4.

Responsible for setup, monitoring, troubleshooting and systematic changes of all respiratory equipment. 5. Performs invasive/non-invasive ventilator management on age specific sub-acute, rehabilitative and chronic patients. 6. Assists in special procedures as requested by Director. 7.

Performs treatment medication preparation and administration and maintains accurate and current medication records. 8. Responsible for respiratory patient assessment, evaluation and treatment. 9. Collects and records all vital signs accurately. 10.

Makes respiratory therapeutic changes as determined by evaluation and treatment protocol and prescribed by a physician. 11. Performs and labels culture and specimen collections from all patients as needed. 12. Participates in orientation and training of entry personnel. 13.

Participates in departmental quality improvement activities. 14. Attends staff meetings. 15. Is assigned on-call by Director as needed. 16.

Is scheduled by Director according to Department needs. 17. Assists with lifting and moving patients and their equipment, weighing up to 200 pounds, using safe body mechanics. 18. Successfully completes Hospital and department specific orientation and ongoing mandatory education requirements. 19.

Run Quality Control and blood gasses in the lab. 20. Manage airways including emergent and routine tracheostomy tube changes. 21. Transport patients to other Hospitals 22.

Other duties may be assigned as necessary to the operation of the department. Knowledge, Experience and Skills A high school diploma or its equivalent is required. Completion of a two-year certification and/or four-year respiratory care program is required.

Knowledge of medical terminology is required. Certification, Registration, or Licensure required by the Job Current Massachusetts respiratory care license. Current BCLS certification is required; PALS and NALS are recommended.

Prepares or supervises aides in the preparation of patients for treatment via proper draping and positioning. Evaluates patient's emotional and physical condition, explains treatment to patient/family/others; performs MMT and ROM/and any other tests as needed. Applies or supervises aides in application of agents such as: TENS, Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation, Hot Packs, Paraffin, HVGS, Cervical and Lumbar Traction, Whirlpool, Massage, Biodex, etc. Administers and/or instructs patients in specific treatment by the use of therapeutic exercise and ambulatory procedure, supplies and instructs patients in use of ambulatory aides such as crutches, cane walkers, etc. Evaluates and treats patients with cardiac and respiratory problems or a potential for same, as required, using various techniques and modalities as indicated; carries out instructions in deep breathing exercises, coughing, huffing, ADL, pre-op and post-op teaching, performs evaluation with maintenance or corrective exercises, assists with progressive ambulation and performs facial and mouth exercises as needed. Evaluates patients during treatment to determine effectiveness and safety, reports to and recommends change to physicians if indicated, discusses or clarifies order with referring physician, discusses problems with other staff members for input and ideas. Instructs patients/families and others as indicated in treatment goals, home programs, and in-hospital self exercises. Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluations and treatment, follows set guidelines for evaluation and record keeping. Participates in quarterly rotation following current routine (i.e. inpatient orthopedics, outpatient clinic, general and surgical, inpatient neurology, inpatient cardiac, outpatient cardiac). Follows department policies and procedures, maintains a high level of safety for patients and property. Qualifications: Graduate of an APTA accredited program.
