POSITION SUMMARY

The REGISTERED NURSE (RN) delivers care to residents ensuring all applicable laws, regulations and Company standards are met. Reports to Director of Nursing (DON).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing practices and procedures as well as the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing nursing functions in the long-term care facility.

  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise professional and non-professional personnel.

  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the Nursing department.

  • Must understand and follow company policies, including harassment and complaint procedures.

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

  • Must be able to knowledgeably and competently deliver basic nursing care to residents.

  • Must be able to evaluate resident's needs through ongoing assessment and revises care plan based on changes in resident's condition.

  • Must be able to provide clinical supervision to LPNs and CNAs.

  • Must be able to chart appropriately and timely.

  • Must practice dependable, regular attendance.

  • Must be able to concentrate and use reasoning skills and good judgment.

  • Must be able to communicate and function in an interdisciplinary team.

  • Must be able to Monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in residents' conditions.

  • Must be able to maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.

  • Must be able to interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess resident's condition.

  • Must be able to modify resident treatment plans as indicated by residents' responses and conditions.

  • Must be able to consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate resident care plans.

  • Must be able to monitor all aspects of resident care, including diet and physical activity.

  • Must be able to instruct individuals, families on topics such as health education, disease prevention, and develop health improvement programs.

  • Must be able to prepare residents for, and assist with, examinations and treatments.

  • Must be able to prepare rooms, sterile instruments, equipment and supplies, and ensure that stock of supplies is maintained.

  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents.

SKILLS and ABILITIES

Education : Associate's Degree (two year college or technical school)

Experience : Six months to one year related experience

Certificates and Licenses

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

  • Must have valid license as Registered Nurse where the assigned facility is located.

Must have CPR certification upon hire or obtained during orientation. CPR certification must remain current during employment.

Position Purpose: Under the guidance of the Care Team Manager/Clinical Manager and working within a team environment and within the scope of the Ohio Nurses Practice Act, the primary purpose of this position is to provide direct nursing care and support to the residents in accordance with Friendship Village established policies, nursing procedures and team standards, and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants. Such supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be required by the Director of Nursing Services or Nurse Clinical Care Team Coordinator to ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. Essential Functions/Accountabilities: Directs the day-to-day functions of the nursing assistants in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility. Ensures the work assignments are developed and completed, and that all nursing personnel comply with the written policies and procedures established by this facility. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment through the unit and shift. Administers medications and performs treatments and nursing procedures according to established policies and procedures and nursing standards of care and ensures that all physician/consultant orders and changes to orders are followed. Ensures that narcotic records are accurate for the shift and notifies the Nursing Supervisor of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted. Administers professional services such as assessments, catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressing/bandages, packs, colostomy and drainage bags, IVs, taking blood, giving massages and range of motion exercises, care for the dead/dying, obtaining sputum, urine and other specimens for lab tests, etc. Monitors the activities of daily living of residents in relation to the normal aging and/or disease process through assessments of mental status, physical condition and psychological well-being. Encourages residents to participate in and coordinates and adjusts schedules to ensure that residents can attend church services and activities. Charts nurses' notes in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided to the resident and that the care plan is being followed, as well as the residents' response to the care and ensures that all entries are signed and dated. Performs other administrative duties such as completing medical forms evaluations, studies, reports, etc. and any required filing. Reports all discrepancies noted concerning physician's orders, diet change, charting error, etc., to the Nursing Supervisor. Ensures that there is an adequate quantity of supplies readily available to personnel and that the assigned work areas, resident care rooms, treatment areas and common areas are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner. Communicates with assigned staff in planning the shifts' services, programs, activities, changes in resident care plans, diet changes, etc. Other Responsibilities Attends and participates in continuing education programs designed to keep current with changes in the nursing profession, as well as to maintain licensure in an active status. Educates residents and their families to nursing care and other related services as necessary. Participates in employee performance evaluations, determining staffing requirements and making recommendations to the Nursing Supervisor concerning team member dismissals, transfers, etc. Expected Behaviors: Cultivates effective and respectful relationships with residents, families and staff. Minimum Qualifications: * Must possess, as a minimum, a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university, or be a graduate of an approved RN training program and possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in the State of Ohio. * Prefer as a minimum, nursing experience in a hospital, skilled nursing care facility, or other related medical facility. * Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met. * Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. * Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. * Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care. * Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and be willing to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel. * Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents. * Must have the ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to lift, push, pull or move 50 lbs on a regular basis and 100 lbs occasionally. * Must not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace. * Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position. * Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies. * Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility. * May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations. Working Conditions: * Works in office area(s) as well as throughout the nursing service area (i.e., drug rooms, nurses' stations, resident rooms, etc.) * Moves intermittently during working hours. * Is subject to frequent interruptions. * Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances. * Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors. * Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors. * Works beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary. * Is subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.). * Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work day, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, and other air contaminants. * Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses. * May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
