Position Highlights

  • Functions as a stepdown unit: administer multiple drips, interpret rhythm and direct care, work with vents and perform vascular work

  • Common diagnoses include general surgery, complex gastrointestinal (GI), genitourinary (GU), vascular, thoracic, orthopedic, and oncology

  • 30 bed unit operates 24/7 with an average daily census of 27.9 and average length of stay of 3-5 days

  • Major treatments/procedures include post-surgical care, continuous cardiac monitoring, routine vital signs every 4 hours and intermittent pulse oximetry

Responsibilities/Tasks

This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at BWMC who have greater than (>) 12 months experience. This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service and cost effectiveness at the unit level. Strives to provide an environment where patients, families, and colleagues collaborate in the delivery of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance. Is accountable to hold the Service Standards of the Nursing Mission, Vision and Values.

What You Need to Be Successful:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing education program approved by the Board of Nursing or found by the Board to be substantially equivalent to the programs in Maryland

  • Currently licensed as an RN in the state of Maryland - Successful completion of a refresher course within past 6 months if nursing practice has not occurred within the past 5 years

  • 1+ years of RN Telemetry experience with dysrhythmia interpretation experience preferred

  • Surgical RN experience a plus

  • ACLS preferred, but can obtain in 6 months

  • BSN preferred

Nurse Residency Program: The Nurse Residency Program at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center is a program that effectively supports new nurse graduates as they transition into their professional roles. Built on an evidence-based curriculum developed by experts from academic medical centers and nursing schools across the country, the program focuses on three critical areas: leadership, patient outcomes, and professional role. The curriculum contains a series of classroom learning and work experiences designed to assist new graduate nurses as they transition during the first year of practice to become leaders at the point of care. The program is intended for nurses who are in direct patient care roles. Transition experiences emphasize the development of the clinical leadership skills necessary for the advanced beginner nurse to be successful as a full partner on the healthcare team. Responsibilities/Tasks: Under limited supervision, the Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment of patients including the development, evaluation and modification of the plan of care. The RN interprets and performs complex patient-care procedures specific to their area of expertise. RN's are members of the Care Team and Support Team and have accountability to function as a team to accomplish patient outcomes identified in the pathway/plan of care.
