  • Demonstrates leadership in organizing the delivery of patient care in an acute psychiatric setting for patients experiencing a wide range of psychiatric conditions.

  • Executes nursing procedures according to policy, utilizing the nursing process.

  • Interacts with and assists in teaching/educating patients.

  • Functions as a therapeutic member in planning and working with patient groups.

  • Serves as a clinical resource person for staff members in their daily activities.

  • Documents pertinent information accurately, timely and legibly.

  • Functions as a medication nurse.

  • Attends mandatory in-services and/or completes required web-based training.

  • Demonstrates respect and tolerance for all patients without regard to age, gender, race, national origin, disability status, religion and/or lifestyle choice (s).

  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.

  • Maintains a professional appearance and attitude.

  • Serves actively and constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, supporting the hospital philosophy of nursing care; to ensure the safety and well-being of every patient.


  • Graduate of accredited school of registered nursing

  • One year inpatient psychiatric experience with adults and/or adolescents preferred

  • Current North Carolina State Registered Nurse License

  • American Heart Association CPR & First Aid certification preferred

  • Knowledge of appropriate nursing assessment, diagnoses, and interventions with patients

  • Knowledge of milieu management

  • Ability to accurately administer medications and treatments

  • Ability to monitor and record response and side-effects to medications and treatments

  • Ability to safely implement Special Treatment Procedures

  • Ability to assist with education patients and families in medication and care management

  • Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families

Job Requirements

Must have current, active NC (or compact state) RN license

Experience in psychiatric nursing helpful, but not required

Current CPR/First Aid through the American Heart Association required

VIEW JOBS 8/8/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-06T00:00 Additional Locations: Durham - 100 Job Description The Behavioral Health Case Manager will provide behavioral health case management services for the BCBSNC plan members via telephonic case review. The goal is to review for and assist with: determining appropriateness of care; assisting with transition of care needs; ensuring quality/quantity of services; collaborating with member/family/treatment team/providers to ensure cost-effective services for members with complex cases; encouraging members to take ownership of their health and to maximize their independence; emphasizing preventive care; providing members with health education, guiding members through the health care maze, providing support, providing benefit information/limitations, and educating on community resources. This position is available in Winston Salem or Durham Campus * Serves as a team member on a multidisciplinary Health Care Coordination team that monitors utilization patterns; identifies and facilitates appropriate health care service delivery for selected patients, providers, procedures, and/or diagnoses; and improves the quality and cost efficiency of care and service. * Serves as a resource and consultant to physicians, providers, members, and families regarding different care options and available benefits/resources. * Maintains awareness of community resources and funding. Utilizes these resources and funding sources in the development of the case management plan. * Collaborates with primary care physician, On-Site Medical Care Coordinator, Discharge Services, the patient, patient family members and other members of the health care team to develop appropriate discharge plans. This includes knowledge of disease process, understanding of family dynamics, empowerment and the impact of personality traits as they relate to the discharge planning/case management process. * Documents all aspects of the plan from the initial assessment, development of the plan, implementation, and monitoring and evaluating the outcome. Completes all correspondence related to case management. Obtains consents as indicated. * Monitors the plan of treatment, and modifies the plan as indicated. Evaluates outcome of the plan. Analyzes and reports case management activity according to department policy. Documents all case activity per departmental guidelines. * Assesses need for consultant review, carefully researches cases and works closely with the Medical Director to determine benefits available on individual cases. Provides support to claims as it relates to case management determinations. * Keeps abreast of new and improved medical care technologies and patterns, regulatory and governmental rules and regulations and BCBSNC policies and procedures and recommends appropriate changes in benefits/benefit determinations. * Obtains and interprets information pertaining to patients' needs as required for assessment, range of treatment, and patient care. * Acts as a patient advocate. Makes customers and their needs a primary focus of the Case manager's actions; develops and sustains profitable customer relationships; making organizational decisions with the customer in mind. Hiring Requirements * An RN degree or Social Worker degree is required with a minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in health care, case management, and/or discharge planning in a Behavioral Health or Psychiatric capacity. * Current North Carolina RN license to practice nursing or a * Licensed Clinical Social Worker license to practice Social Work. * Certified Case Manager (CCM) certification is preferred upon hire or within 2 years of hire. * Proof of North Carolina Social Worker Certification and Licensure Board (NCSWCLB) for a Social Worker is preferred upon hire or within 2 years of hire. Hiring Preferences * Experience working with Community agencies; a sound understanding of Managed Care and knowledge of Managed Care concepts/philosophy; knowledgeable about current behavioral health and substance abuse treatment practices using alternative care settings (i.e. – inpatient, day treatment, partial hospitalization, home care to include an in home social worker visit if needed) * Knowledgeable in Behavioral and Medical Management process across the continuum of care and knowledge of application of clinical criteria/guidelines for medical necessity, level of care, and concurrent patient management; familiar with legal terminology and liability issues and has the ability to handle ethical and risk management issues * Demonstrates creativity, critical thinking, counseling, interviewing, negotiating, and research skills * Self-motivated and works independently; stays informed of current Governmental and State actions in regards to the Mental Health Parity Bill or any other revisions/updates made to include the North Carolina Department of Insurance as it relates to Mental Health/Substance Abuse * Strong people skills and the ability to be resourceful * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of internal and external customers * Strong organizational skills which allow simultaneous completion of tasks and duties. * Proven ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing detailed and complex information to others that possess varying degrees of comprehension * Excellent Time Management skills * Knowledge of DSM-IV-TR and ICD-9 and CPT coding * Telephonic case review skills * Meets timeliness standards and timeframes * Ability to deal effectively with change and remain focused Blue Cross And Blue Shield Of North Carolina Winston Salem NC
