Operated by Methodist Home for Children in partnership with the Department of Public Safety, the assessment center provides a comprehensive juvenile assessment in a residential setting with the goal of matching the youth to the most appropriate services in his or her community. The Center serves Level II offenders between the ages of 10 and 17.

The Registered Nurse is primarily responsible for providing health assessments for all youth admitted to the Assessment Center and providing consultation to the Assessment Center staff regarding youth medical needs.

This is a part-time opportunity offering a flexible work schedule on an as-needed basis, approximately 10-15 hours/week. This position is located in Asheville, NC.

DUTIES

  • Conduct physical exams for all youth admitted to the Assessment Center within 24 hours of admission.

  • Work with Operations Manager to review standard operating procedures regarding healthcare services.

  • Provide oversight for medication administration and record keeping protocols.

  • Responding to the youth medical needs, such as sick call, regular medical assessments, and daily triage of injuries and illnesses.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university. Licensed by the North Carolina State Board of Nursing. Minimum of one (1) year experience working with youth and adolescents.

Keith Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center (JFKADATC) is a 68-bed inpatient treatment facility designed to meet the needs of alcohol and other drug dependent adults of the 37 westernmost counties in North Carolina. The facility treats chemically dependent consumers and also those who have a substance abuse and psychiatric diagnosis. The primary responsibility of the Registered Nurse is to provide a safe environment and treatment based on Professional Standards of Nursing Care in conjunction with the Medical Staff. The Registered Nurse functions as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team whose responsibility is to facilitate the bio-psycho-social rehabilitation and/or safe detoxification of the patient utilizing the nursing process; i.e., observation, evaluation, planning through identification of treatment needs, implementation of intervention and evaluation of efficacy and meeting the patient's needs as they change. Registered Nurses also facilitate educational/ supportive groups, deliver lectures, provide individual education counseling related to preventative health, medical status, and /or medication usage and facilitate direct interventions in crisis situations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies * Knowledge of professional principles, practices and theory of nursing and its application. * Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing the provision of nursing care. * Knowledge of medical terminology. * Knowledge of medications and the physiological effect of those medications. * Ability to independently plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. * Ability to lead a team; skill in delegation and making assignments. * Ability to guide and counsel subordinate staff and provide feedback and advice/counsel to nursing staff on care rendered to patients. * Ability to provide patient and family education on disease processes, treatment and self-care. * Ability to demonstrate patience in dealing with patients, clients, and families. * Ability to communicate information to patients, families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner, verbally, in writing or by demonstration. * Ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations. * Ability to effectively teach nursing staff through orientation and on the job training. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
